Moderators: Time to get this forum under control
Friday, August 31, 2007 1:43 PM
The title says it all.

I've been a memeber for the last 5-6 years and I've been watching this forum go downhill for the last few years. The number of people posting extremely rude comments are deterring those who have no time for nonsense away from posting or to thier local J-Body forum (JCO, J-BOM, etc.). I don't think I've read one post in the last few months that didn't have at least 2-3 disturbing replies.

Simple as this - most forums are moderated by forum moderators and people who do not show common courtesy within thier replies (or posts) are suspended or banned. This ensures that there is a reasonable level of respect shown to fellow j-body enthusiasts. Secondly, this ensures that the overall perspective of the J-body world that we are trying to represent is not that of immaturity.

Rules of conduct need to be enforced. As per the "Newbies: An Owner's Manual":

---------------------------------------------
JBO is not run by Jerry Springer. Nobody likes drama. Nobody likes attention whores. We're all here for the same reason so let's at least TRY to get along. Fighting over the internet is EXTREMELY lame. When you don't agree with someone, "omg u r lame u fag!!!" is probably not the best way to respond. We don't want to have to send our e-Steve after you.
---------------------------------------------

As a professional and National forum, each JBO exec and JBO Moderator has the responsibility to enforce a respectable and courteous condut between members. If you choose not to, then be prepared to have the forum over-run by immaturity.

As for those member who are accountable for the immaturity - if the moderators do not stop you it is not my place to address you - until you address me within a forum.

For those who agree with me - please post your response so we can shed some life on thi sissue to our exec and get this addressed.

Thanks and feel free to PM me or reply if anyone wants to discuss this further.

Stais

Heh.. I've been here since 00, and it's just fine. I think the moderators are doing a great job.

In fact, if you have a legitimate problem thread... perhaps you should report it to the mods, instead of bitching out here in the General forum.

#1. We moderators have jobs, we can't read every post and nit pick everything.

#2. This is the internet, people are entitled to their opinion. If you don't like somebodies reply, or somebody rubs you the wrong way with some reply, then stop coming here. There are a lot more things in life than some idiot on the other side of the country typing something to get a rise out of you. If you still want to come here, then ignore the posts you don't feel are up to your moral standards. Unlike most other forums, there are 30,000+ members here posting 24 hours a day, and less than 10 moderators to "police" it all.

#3. We as moderators are NOT going to dictate courtesy and manners on the internet. We WILL keep people in line if they become excessively belligerent or idiotic, but we are not going to read and follow every post and every person and make sure they are being courteous and nice. See #2.

Yea Lenko, I agree it's ok but on the other hand, it has moved down the age scale a few years. The mods have done a good job more or less but there is room for improvement.

But he's right, if you have a problem. Report it to the mods instead of creating another "Jerry Springer" style post.

Wow, some people will post anything for attention.

As someone once told me in the past, "If you don't like the way things are run here, get the @!#$ out and don't let the door hit your ass on the way out."

Seriously it's not that bad here, hell it's not bad at all. I belong to a bunch automotive forums and this is one of the top 3 favorites in my list among the forums I visit frequently. Great info here for anyone wanting to mod or upgrade a J. You might even get lucky and get information/tips for cars not of the J body realm as well. If you don't like a post or the way someone replies, why not talk to that person via PM or take the matter to a moderator privately. If the moderator feels it's an issue I'm sure they will take care of it. I don't think it's such a big deal to make a big stink about it. So some of the people are @!#$s on here....you'll meet people like that in real life, so what will you do then? It's not like there are moderators in the real world...well I guess they are, and they are called cops. Still they're not going to come rushing to your aid because you heard something off-handed that you thought was rude.

Just learn to get thick skin, deal with it and move on. I've been teased, picked on, joked around with a time or two on this forum and it doesn't prevent me from coming back to this forum even if I no longer own a J. If I got offended by every comment I read on every forum I frequent, let along the .Org, I'd be on the floor of my bedroom curled up in fetal position afraid to even turn on my computer.

Yeah people on this forum and the Internet in general could be nicer but it's not that big of deal.

Enjoy the site and ignore the @!#$s.

Skolastix: Someone posts an asinine reply, who cares?

Realistically, put yourself in the shoes of Dave and the Mods: They are NOT paid, they have to watch 15,000 members, and there are some posts that go into 5,000+ words (I tend to be the writer of most of them ). Now... if you consider that having these mods (theres about.. what, 5-6 of them at any one time) on their own time, and going through every post at peak time, you're talking easily 4-5 hours of work per mod every day at peak times.

Most people are going to conduct themselves properly, if not with a touch of humour. The ones that don't consistently, are going to weed themselves out anyhow.

BTW, if you wanted to see professional forum moderation services, you'd see 2 things almost immediately:
1: Forum Costs would skyrocket. Dave already pays a LOT of money to keep this place running, and those of us that pay for premium posting access help pay part of that operating cost back. Even still, professional forum moderation for a site this size would easily bankrupt the .Org.
2: Site attendance would plummet because the Cost of outside moderation would necessitate everyone paying a premium fee in order to post or search.

Sadly, there are assholes on the forum... How like life.

MODs do a great job here

searching should always be free (maybe more people would do it then), and I can't remember a single time i have ever seen the OPs screen name before now

Skolastix I agree completely, but it has been this way a lot longer than 5 or 6 years. I think its always been this way. Nice try, but the replies are proof of what you are talking about. You will end up like most of us - not posting very often because of all the negativity. You might try ClubCav, the people on that forum seem to be much more pleasant than some of the people you run into here.

I think the reply about your mother should be a no questions asked ban.

As far as the comment that the mods do a great job here....opinions vary.

Why would you expect it out of a forum on the net??

I have a full time job and I am getting married in two weeks. In my free time I do my moderator job. If you find a thread that you feel me or another mod need to do something please use the contact us button. If you don't want to use that please by all means feel free to email me, I can take a look at something and see what needs done if anything. I think every mod here is very personable and really is in touch with what is going on with the JBO.

The only caveat is that we aren't here to make everyone nice, we cant force people to say nice things about the pics of your new car nor will any of us delete a post if it isnt something that violates a rule....unfortunately on the internet you need a tough skin and take everything with a grain of salt.

unless someone is a complete ass, i don't really enforce rule #5. even at that, someone has to be really over the top to get me to bother with it. most of the time, it's deserved. if someone posts the most retarded of questions without bothering to search and get flamed for it, it's really their fault. i don't remember the last time i had to warn someone that they were being too rude or obnoxious. besides, if someone gets their panties in a bunch over a comment on an internet forum, they need to loosen up anyway.

i am away from home from noon until 11 pm for work. most of the other moderators do a lot of work while i am away, and i try to take care of anything i see when i get home (and whenever i can on the weekends). personally, i think they do a damn good job of keeping this forum tame during the busiest time of the day. like shifted said though, there are less than a dozen moderators that keep this forum regulated. considering the traffic this site generates each day, that's a lot of posts that don't get read by any moderators. if there are posts that break rules, don't be afraid to contact a moderator to have it taken care of. we can't catch it all. a lot of people say "well, so-and-so did get get banned for ____ comment"... and it's probably cause a mod never saw said comment.

we do our jobs to the best of our abilities. threads like this do nothing to motivate us to do better, cause we're already doing what we can. use the "Contact Us" link to send an e-mail to Dave directly, or send an e-mail to the Moderator account for all the mods to see. chances are you won't get a reply, because one of us will simply take care of the situation (if it needs moderating) and there is nothing further to say. otherwise, PM or IM a moderator if you have questions that need answers.

any other questions?
