I competed in the DUBS St Louis show over the weekend. Guy there had a tricked out second gen Cavy. Custom fade two-tone paint, matching custom interior, lambo doors, etc, Full blow show car. Real nice work. The owner won NOPI St Louis '07. I was BSing with the owner and mention how tough the sport compact competition looked. He started laughing. DUBS WOULD NOT LET HIM COMPETE IN SPORT COMPACT BECAUSE THE CAVY IS A DOMESTIC. WTF!!!!!!!!! LOL After the awards were handed out, I went looking around for the winners in my class "Fullsize Mild". I came across "Best Sport Compact". 1968 Camaro. WTF!!!!! A domestic won best sport compact. I have come to the conclusion that DUBS are a bunch of dumba......
My personal experience with dealing with them and there staff was a joke. When I asked about how they went about spliting mild from wild. I got "body mods". ?????????? How many???????? 1...2....3....4.... Full blown show cars in mild with cars that are actually driven on the street. Winner of Wild had a custom paint job. No body mods. ?????????? I have come to the conclusion that DUBS judges on sub and rim size. NOT the work or quality or cleanliness. Guess next year I roll in with a set of 24" rims and two 15" subs and collect my trophy. lol
welcome to the wonderful waste of time called car shows. big shows are always @!#$ up, small shows are always old school domestic biased, its hard to find a good fair show.
although technically J-bodys are classified as pieces of @!#$ if there is a sport compact class then yes the cav is in it.
A cav is definately more sport compact than a Camaro...that's more a classic muscle category there...
thats why i got out of the whole show bull@!#$
its nothing but a waste of money and time

You didn't automatically realize this from a magazine called "Dubs"?
1989 Z24 Convertible - Dust Covered
2006 tC - Dust Covered, but driven more
Well, the name isnt as stupid as DONK, BOX & BUBBLE
There's no judging standards or national board to help regulate how shows are conducted. I don't see why the big shows can't get together and setup some training and practices that other shows can follow. If a show said "Judges Certified and Trained by the National Car Judging Association" I would feel better about it. Even if they did do something screwy, it'd be nice to know they could be decertified and that it wouldn't happen again.
We have professional refs. We need professional judges. I'm sure there are MORE than a few guys out there now that can show the rest of these idiots how it's done.

Since I own a 69 Camaro, I was curious about this. My Camaro really isn't that much bigger than my Cav. But it's 3500+lbs vs 2700, and a wheel base of 108" vs. 104". It's actually, at least by today's standards, a mid-size.
But on a side note, given some of the boats they used to make back then, it probably was compact...for it's day.

A Camaro was classified as a pony car, not a muscle car. Don't know what people want to call them now.

First of all... I have to give you credit for actually knowing what a 3rd gen J-body actually weighs.... I had to park my car on a scale to find that out.... most people just assume that the sitcker in the door sill (GVWR) is what the car weighs..... but those people are ignorant so I usually show them some slack.
Secondly..... the only car I've ever heard called a pony car is a first gen Mustang... but maybee thats just has something to do with where I'm from.
Yes a 68 Camaro was a small car back when it was new... honestly.... I'de be suprised if anyone called anything muscle cars back then..... they probably just called them fast.
But by todays standards... a Camaro is a Muscle car and a J-body is a sport compact..
I'm still pissed that a highly modded S-10 won the "in progress" trophy in the only car show I ever entered my 2nd gen Sunbird in (I only entered it so my local J-body group could win the group participation trophy). Crap... my car was really only one of two cars their that where actually.. "in progress"..
Coome to think of it..... what ever happened to that trophy and the picture of all of us posing woith it?
i say just build a car that will beat everyone out there and then it wont matter what class or who your up against. full blown paint job would be considered a wild mod. generally you need a few wild mods to be thrown in wild but then again it will depend on the show and how many cars are in the class in general. there are allot of people that are on the line so dependant on the show you go to they could be in wild or mild. and wether you drive the car every day or wether its a trailer queen doesnt matter, its a car show, the cars are being judged on how nice they are, not weather you drive them to work or not. when you start going to allot of shows you find out wich ones aren't worth your time and wich ones are worth going to. even some older type car shows are worth going to if its a good show. i just got back from a small indoor show with about 120 old school cars and about 3 new style cars and took home a best of award.

yep, jason you hit the nail right on the head. although shows around here are a bit different.... we dont have anything like a j-body class or a freaking sport compact class at all. i usually have to show the modifed class which puts me up against quite a few cars seemingly every time. there is only one show in the area that has sport compact classes... i was in compact customz domestic this year and took first. amazing what happens when u get the right class for your car eh?

Pony Cars: Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds, Cougars, Javelins, and the Barracuda and Challenger, but those are debatable, as the Cuda started before the Stang, and the Challenger was bigger than the Cuda
Personally..... I don't care what a judge thinks...... I'de rather line up against a show car on a drag strip than be parked next to them.... then we'll see who comes out on top
(btw... before anyone says my car isnt that fast..... look at my mod list first..... I'de like to see someone else get that good of a time with the mods I have
)

I would agree with what he said.
FORGET GIRLS GONE WILD WE HAVE GOVERNMENT SPENDING GONE WILD!
compact car shows are a BIG waste of time..who wants to spend a whole day sitting in a parking lot oogling over a bunch of plastic crap?? This 'sport compact' thing looks like a fad that will die out.
a j body is nothing but an economy car
1LowCav wrote:This 'sport compact' thing looks like a fad that will die out.
considering more and more cars are being smaller and smaller with smaller with fuel economy taking over as a huge selling point I don't see the "sport compact" thing going anywhere anytime soon.

I'll say it... your car isn't fast. Doesn't matter if it's bone stock, it's still a 15 second cav.
I knew that was coming... it just took longer than I thought
Just to be clear... I didn't mean to come off as saying my car was fast.. what I meant was that 15.2 is pretty dang good conidering what is done to my car, and I have yet to race someone that can outdrive me... but thats way off topic and honestly cant remember why I typed it in the first place.
15.2 might not be considered "fast".... but it sure as hell isn't slow.... if you think that... than your mid 14 second 350Z is slow too.
It's all good though....

A camaro
Well... I can't argue with that answer LOL
You have a point though.... it's getting harder to stick cars into certain classes with all the crap thats on the road nowadays.
But as far as are cars go...
Sunfire SE + Cavelier RS = Compact
Sunfire GT + Cavelier Z24 = Sport Compact
As far a Camaros go.... I still say that its a muscle car.... or maybe a sport coupe if you wan't to get technical.
