I have never owned one, but judging from observed selling values, anything more than $4000 for a decently optioned, average condition, average miles would be a reaming.
Oh, if you're in that range, 1995 5M OBD I FTW!
1989 Z24 Convertible - Dust Covered
2006 tC - Dust Covered, but driven more
my 2002 z24 four door 5spd off the dealership lot with 74000 miles cost me $8400 jan 2006. private seller probably 1500-2500 for those year. it's a 11-12 year old cavalier that the motor was known for problems after 140K miles. ie timing chain. i would get one becuase of the emissions laws in NY swap an eco or a newer 2000-2002 2.4 in and go to town. with the getrag.
I paid 2 grand for my 97 Sunfire SE (with a 5-speed and 2.4 engine)..
I think it books just below 3 grand.. (a little over 3G's in exelent condidtion)
I wouldn't think the car your talking about wouldn't be worth a dollar more than $3500.
by the time this guy gets around to buying the car (he said 1-1.5 years) it will be 2009 and the newest model he wants will be 14 years old! if you pay more than a grand for a 14 year old economy car........then you deserve to lose that money. you should be able to find a 95-96 z24 for 500-800 ideally. hell, you can find em for that much NOW.

I'll be getting a 97 z24 with air ride, lambo doors and a carbonfiber hood. for 4 grand in december/january so I think for a 95-96 2 grand if the miles are low.

you live in IL though. look up used Js at dealers in IL compared to WI. When i was looking to upgrade to an 02 z24/ls sport, everything in WI was $8000+, checked out stuff in IL just across the border, $6000+. nice big $2000 difference in a mere 50 miles or less distance.
anyways, i picked up a 96 sunfire for 800 last year. my 99 cavalier was 4000 a couple years ago.

04 Cav 2 door 2.2 A/T cruise, tilt, CD, air with 57k on the clock for $6500 last November. Around here in MN, if you shop around, there are so many Cavaliers for sale it's easy to find a decent deal. Funny thing, I could buy two Cavaliers for the price of one Honda Civic.
i just bought a metalic cherry 95 z24 auto power everything(122400 miles) for $500---the previuos owner had just put 4 new tires-alternator-battery-belts pads/rotors/rear shoes/drums- recharged a/c-past inspection---2months ago
I might be in th hunt for a 95-97 sedan..lower miles (I hope) and under 2 grand (or around)....
i bought my 99z24 vert for 4k with 70K miles about 2 months ago
i got my 99 Z with 70K, and a full alpine stereo, lanzar amp, and 2 10" kickers for $3,000.

well.....you also got kinda raped too, because I got my 03 LS sport sedan fully loaded like yours back in May 05 with 23,8xxmiles for $8900....and since Cavaliers were discontinued in 05 you should have paid less for one in 06

Your right.. I should have actually bought a decent car but I was too cheap at the moment
I bought a 99 Sunfire 2.2L for $800. Head gasket was blown but an easy fix.

i paid 1700 for a 96 cav, 2.2 with a lot of options and only 70k on the clock
that was i think 2 years go, so i would pay maybe that much for a Z with similar mileage of the same year
I paid $8900 for my 97z with 40k. of course that was back in 2001 before GM started giving like 10k rebates on new ones.
