95 Z24

I just bought a 95 Cavalier Z24, it has the 2.3l QUAD4 engine with 180k miles on it. The car needs some body work to look nice and the engine runs good. Is there anything i should know about this car? Should i look into rebuilding the engine?

the 2.3 was offered in the 95 year only, so you got lucky IMO. not only does that car use the OBDI computer, but pretty much most if not all of the 2.3 HO engine parts are swappable into your engine. i say rebuild the engine with some of these HO parts and have some fun. good luck!

eventually i say yes, you should think about rebuilding the engine. there's no sense in letting things go while you still had time to fix them. the 95 2.3 was the ONLY year of it's kind in ANY gm vehicle so finding some of the specific parts for it isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world. but by no means does this make the engine un-repairable if need be, its certainly an engine worth fixing when the time comes.

as for if it will still remain a good running engine, yes... probably. depends a lot on how well maintained it has been and how well maintained you intend on keeping it. i've seen some quad family engines last upwards of around 200-220,000 so i do not see why you could not reach those numbers.

just do your best to do the up-keep, regular oil changes are a must as well as replacing any and all parts that become worn out and need to be canned as soon as you know about them. don't just say screw it and no fix something you should be fixing.

good luck with the engine, if you take care of it, it will take care of you.

right now the only things that need replacing are the a/c pump and the front bumper, the engine makes no unwanted noise, where could i find the HO parts

You should be able to find HO parts at a junkyard... you just need to know what cars they came in (I cant remember.... but I'm sure there are plenty of people here that do) or you should be able to get a bit from GM or a good autoparts store...

The cam shafts (well one of them) and the intake manifold and throttlebody on your 2.3 are common things that people like to swap into 2.4's .... to do a cecret cam swap.... al you would have to do is replace the exaust cam.... or you could go with HO cams (you have to replce the cam housing on 2.4's to do that but I'm not sure if you have to on your car).

The 2.3 is already to most powerful engine (stock) that came in a 3rd gen.

huh? the only year 3rd gen 2.3 was the 95 and it had the exact same power as the 2.4 at 150. you mean it is AMONG the most powerful 3rd gen engines.

what does the HO quad 4 have that my engine doesnt have?

Bigger cams, better flowing head(086 is the best), no balance shafts, 10:1 compression, better intake, better exhaust manifold(in early quad 4 cars, 92-95 manifolds are pretty restrictive).

close, but not quite. they had the same hp but less torque than the twin cams

the JBO FAQ wrote:1995: The all-new Cavalier Z24 and Sunfire GT were introduced mid model year with the 2.3L Quad 4 (LD2) engine. This engine featured a 9.5:1 compression ratio, 150 Horsepower at 5600 rpm and 145 ft/lbs of torque at 4800 rpm.

1996: The 2.3L Quad 4 engine is replaced for the 1996 model year with the updated 2.4L Twin Cam (LD9) engine. This engine features twin balance shafts to quieten noise and improve comfort and reliability. The new 2.4L Twin Cam engine features a 9.5:1 compression ratio, 150 horsepower at 5600 rpm, and 155 ft/lbs of torque between 2400 and 4400 rpm (yes, a very flat torque curve!).
