I have never owned a j-body but am looking to get into them.
I have a friend who has an '02 Cavalier LS Sport that I am looking to buy off him. Details as follows.
'02 Chevy Cavalier LS Sport
-Yellow
-2-door
-5spd.
-50k miles
-great condition inside/out
-Hans Racecraft Stage 1 turbo kit
-BLOWN MOTOR
What would something like this be worth? Any input is highly appreciated.
Thanks a lot in advance,
Keith

honestly i'd take points off for it being yellow for one and having a blown motor no matter if its turbo'd or not i'd say no more than $1500
yeah id say about 2-2500
maybe..if the body is in excellent condition..but you still gotta go through the pita to get a motor, put it in, make it run correctly..and i would ditch the turbo kit or be smart with it..because obviosely someone wasnt.
Thanks for the input guys!
By the way, I forgot to mention it has the 2.2 ecotec motor.
Do you know what I'd be looking at for a used motor?

thats a pretty average price for an ecotec... usually you can find them for anywhere from $200-800. just depends on where your looking for it at.

Thanks for the input everyone. I really appreciate it.
I just got back from taking another look at the car, and it does have some VERY MINOR rust starting on the bottom of the driver side door (barely noticable). Other than that, it is very clean.
Alright, well judging by your responses the car should be worth somewhere between, $2000 and $3000. He also told me tonight, that the turbo kit will not be going with it. And he NEEDS $3000 for the car, because that's what he still owes on it.
With that being said, if I were to spend $3000 on the car, would that be a decent deal or not?
I'm guessing it would, even with buying a new motor and all the other little things that may have to be done.
As I see it;
Car $3000
Motor +800 (roughly)
So I'd be getting the car for about $1200 cheaper than blue book value.
Let me know what you guys think.

3000 for a car with a blown engine? If the turbo kit was included, it would be an ok deal, without the kit, its hardly worth it. Try and find similar cars in your area for sale, see what kind of shape they are in, and check their prices. Take a good 2500 off the prices for having a blown motor. That should cover the engine, and all the time and effort you have to spend to get it in and working. This should give you a good idea of what to pay. I would pay no more then 2750. Try and get him to throw in the turbo for 3 thousand, or maybe 3250. If you get it, sell it for a decent amount of money, or install it and enjoy.

The motor install is going to be done by myself. I got a quote of $900 for a motor with 30k miles. And if you ad up all the other little things that may need to be done (hoses, fluids, etc), i'd say i would be spending around $4000 total (give or take $100).
The only thing I am unsure of, is if I am going to have enough free time to complete it anytime soon. If not, I would at least like to get my money back out of it. And in my opinion, it would be a pretty nice deal for someone on hear who has a fair share of knowledge about Cavaliers. And could do the swap no problem and make at least $1000 plus on it.
I will also find out what he is going to do with the turbo kit for people that may be interested. I'm guessing he is going to end up selling it. If anyone is interested let me know and I can get back to you on how much he would want for it. I know that it was on the car less than 1k miles. And he bought it brand new for $2400. Everything is also in excellent condition, and the turbo itself is mint.

yeah i personally can get a low mileage ecotec motor for around $800 around here and honestly i wouldn't tell the guy what i could get one for because then he'd try to up the price because who wouldnt want a running jbody for 2k
LOL without the turbo I wouldnt give this dude 5 bucks plus its yellow...
dang what with all the hate on yellow hahaha
^^ i dunno... personally i love the 00-02 yellow cavs.
$3000 is not a good deal dude, especially without the turbo kit. if you could get it for 2 grand i'd do it, but 3 grand is pushing it.
i bought my 00 Z with a new motor for $2000, and it was even at a dealer lot. i got a helluva deal on it, but those kind of deals are out there. just keep looking.

yeah. 3k is a chunk of change for a car with a boat anchor under the hood. for what ecotecs run around here I would pay 2 grand for it, personally I like the yellow, but I wouldn't be paying 900 for the motor either.

At the least you could buy it and sell off the good parts, depending on whats still good it might pay off the new motor.

I just bought an '04 ecotec 2.2 for 400 bucks. runs good, 24k on the clock. not super-low miles, but low enough.
Tell him if he wants that 3K, he's gonna have to fork over the turbo.
He'll bitch and whine about it, but to clear his name off the loan, there's a 95% chance he'll take it.
