Hello all. Will a 2.4L quad4 from a '97 Cavalier w/a 5spd be a direct swap into a '00 Cavalier 2.4L auto. Not sure if the manual has a different crankshaft or not and if there's any year difference. Any info appreciated.

It is a direct swap if you do the following.
The auto tranny mounts will have to be cut off and new stick tranny mounts welded in for the new tranny.
You'll also need all of the pedals, shifter, reservoir tank, and to drill the firewall to accomodate some of the components needed for the hydraulic reserve tank.
The last thing you'll need is some minor harness tweaking for eliminate the egr system that the 2000 model year doesn't have but the '97 engine had. Either that or just swap ECU's and make some changes to the wiring.
Good luck with it and hope it answers some of you questions.

Thank you Dave and JBO!
I don't think he was looking to swap a 5 speed into his car, but maybe I just read it wrong.
Incase you were only interested in the engine itself- it will work fine, but a few things will need to be swapped over.
Basically, the automatic flywheel will need to be bolted up & the tranny mount thats located on the back of the engine block will need to be swapped over as well.
The intake manifold & exhaust manifold off the 2000 will have to be used & you should remove the EGR valve from the head.
Also, the knock sensor on the back of the motor is different. I believe the threads are different where it screws in. A few people have gotten around it by welding a larger nut onto the block, or drilling out the hole & retapping it the right size. I'm not 100% certain on the knock sensor setups but its been discussed several times before so a search should yield some more info.
That should be pretty much it... maybe someone else has something to add.
Hope this helps.
Thanks alot for the info. Yes, I'm looking to replace the engine only. The current engine has a bad crank, bearings etc. and wanted to be sure the manual crankshaft was the same. Switching over manifolds, mount and flexplate etc. will not be a problem. Again, thanks for the replies.

RedDevil, I tried a search for the knock sensor issue.......no luck. Is it just a matter of the newer style having a different connector? Could I possibly splice an older style connector on the '00 harness? TIA
Todd
Nope nope... not that simple.
The newer knock sensor is a 2 wire setup & the threads are larger I think.
The old knock sensor is 1 wire & the threads are smaller.
A search for "knock sensor" in the performance section yielded
this.
Should help tremendously.
You could find out what size hole the new knock sensor hole is for the new 2000 engine, install a hole plug, and then drill/ tap that hole plug for the '97 knock sensor.
This would be the first thing I would do if it were me to do this job.
I'm not sure if anyone has done anything like this but seems feasible.
Good luck with it man.

Thank you Dave and JBO!
Thanks alot guys, I should be able to make it work. Sounds like drilling and tapping the hole bigger is the best route.
