So I may be a J Tuner Again

I'm hopefully trading in my dodge truck tomorrow (well, making them a deal tomorrow anyway), and getting myself an 01 GT.

Here's the one I'm getting.

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=241073001&dealer_id=500210&car_year=2001&model=SUNFIR&num_records=25&systime=&make2=&start_year=1981&keywordsfyc=&keywordsfyc=&keyword srep=&keywordsrep=&engine=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&awsp=false&search_type=used&distance=25&marketZipError=false&search_lang=en&make=PONT&keywords_display=&color=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispse archform&min_price=0&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=12204&advanced=&end_year=2009&doors=&transmission=&max_price=7000&cardist=11

I absolutly Can not wait. It was a year ago in March that I sold my 99. And ever since that day, I've been looking for another one. Well, her she be. She's a beauty. Very clean, runs great, shifts great, I'm in love.

Can't wait. Should have her by early next week if they take my deal.

Here's hoping!

might just be me but doesn't $6k seem a little steep for an '01?

Book value is 6200. But it looks like someone beat me there this morning and gave him a deposit. Must been very early, because I called him at 9.

So I didn't get it. They beat me there, and bought it.

Damn. I was looking forward to it.

Well, I went with my second choice. An 01 Escort ZX2. It has more pep than I thought it would, and it handles nicely. It's also got low miles, so i guess I'm official back. Although my girlfriend's car is a 1999 Cavi sedan.

Oh well. Life goes on. I actually kinda like the little ZX2.

I can't afford the gas anymore. When I bought it, I used it for commercial towing and hauling, and that payed for itself. Now that it stopped, I can't afford it anymore. Needed something fuel efficient for commuting and everyday driving.

It may not be a J, but Escorts have a good reliability standing, and great MPG's, and like i said, it's got more pep than I thought it would. I do like it and it did surprise me.

I got some for ya.

F*cked Over Rebuilt Dodge

Fix Or Repair Daily

And My personal favorite

"At least they circled the problem."

I sworn up and down I would not own a Ford, but times get tough, and I'll admit i was looking into A Honda. Then I found that sunfire, that someone beat me to, and the Ford was the next choice. I'd rather drive a Turd than a R!ce Maker.

All in all though I like what I've read about them. And stock for stock, my ZX2 is 2 tenths of a second faster than a Sunfire GT in the 1/4 mile. That, and it weighs 2200 lbs. Nice and light.

Best part about it? I can still maintain my record for never owning an Import.

I had a Focus ZX3 with the 2.0 Zetec which is the same engine in the ZX2. Motor gets it's roots from the original 1.6L SOHC in the first gen escorts (zetec head will even bolt up to an old 1.6/1.9 cvh although I've only seen a CVH head on a Zetec block). Not a bad running car and 30+ mpg so I think you did pretty good even if this is a GM forum. Don't know about the ZX2, but the 2nd gen escorts were notorious for breaking rear springs which may be what eyeopnr is referring to.

Zetec/CVH hybrid

the zx2 isnt bad but make sure you keep an eye on the timing belt tensioner or the bolt that goes into the head on the idler cuz they tend to be a common problem on those ...ive seen multiple ones go and the car spins time.other then that they are ok...but id gladly drive my j over my moms zx2 any day.

The great thing about the timing belt on this car is that it is a non-interference engine. So, pop a belt, just put a new one on and drive it. You don't have to spend $800 on head work. The rear springs on this platform aren't an issue. It is a Zetec family engine but it isn't exactly the same as the ZX3. The ZX2 has a variable exhaust cam instead of an EGR valve. The ZX3 has the EGR valve. The ZX2 (actually the latest Escort platform) scores way above average in long-term reliability. Not a singly J-body (or many GM's) can claim that. The only reason this car is so reliable is because Mazda made most of the car. About the only thing Ford on the car is the badge. The Zetec engine has been used to win rally races for decades. Hopefully you got the MTX because the auto's suck. The weak link in the MTX is the differential. It is an open design and only has two spider gears. You get too much wheel hop and they beat the side gears to death and the teeth come off. A Phantom Grim ($300) goes a long way in helping this issue up to about 250 whp. Above that you'll want to look into getting the MSP LSD. There is one guy making 400whp that is stripping the gears. I think he has some case flex though. My car has over 170,000 miles on the original engine and the engine has never failed or had any parts replaced. It even ran without oil for 5 minutes in rush hour traffic. The fitting for the aftermarket oil pressure gauge broke while my wife was driving it in downtown Indianapolis during rush hour. She said the engine sounded like gravel in a dryer. It took her 5 minutes to get off the road (no shoulder) and into a parking lot. I went down and fixed the fitting and poured 5 quarts in to fill it up. Every bit of the oil was gone. It had been gone for awhile because there wasn't even any spots in the parking lot she pulled in. I started the car and it knocked a bit and then was fine. That was 6 years ago. I boosted it 2 years ago and I'm running it on a base tune still. They are tough little bastards. My wifes' ZX2 has 160,000 on it and still gets over 33 mpg. The only time you see one in the junkyard is when someone wrecks it. I see a lot of Cavy's that aren't wrecked with less then 120,000 miles. The engines or tranny's just blew and they junked it. I know this is a J-body site, but to make an ignorant statement like 'boo ZX2' just makes you look silly.

I will be doing that actually... I've finally gotten a name for her, and it's a long story, but the name is bullz-i

I'm sure you're loving the fact that I seem to swap cars every 6 months.

I've never been happy since I sold my J. Funny thing is, I think the dealer that had the sunfire I posted above never sold it, and lied to me because they didn't want to take my truck in on trade. I'm pretty sure they still have it.

Thanks for the info. Yes it's a manual. Never again will I own an automatic car. trucks on the other hand are a different story. And I knew about the mazda thing. lots of interchangeability, and I like that. Makes parts easier to find.

Do you happen to know who makes cam's for the Zetec's?

You can use any Focus Zetec intake cam but since we have VCT, you have to get special exhaust cams. www.zxtuner.com sells cams for us. Have you been to www.teamzx2.com yet?

No, I haven't been to teamzx2.com yet, but I am on feoa.net. and I've seen the stuff on zxtuner.com too.

Do you know what kinda gains are seen with those cams?

Re: So I may be a J Tuner Again

I'm a moderator on Team ZX2. I go by the same name there.

It depends on the cams you get. High torque will show more lower and mid gains and high rev will show more top-end gains. Unless you plan to balance the block or go with high compression, high rev isn't really advisable IMO. It also depends on what other supporting mods you have. Say, for instance, you install a header alone. You'll see about 10 whp. But, with an intake, exhaust, and cat delete, that same header can show 15-20 whp gain. Alone the cams might show about 20 whp. With supporting breathing mods and a chip, you can show about 35+ whp depending on the tune and quality of the supporting mods. Go to Team ZX2 and look in the 'Newbie' section for the 'Welcome to Team ZX2' thread stuck at the top of the section. I wrote that for new members to give them a general idea about mods that do and don't work for this car and how to select them and where to find them. We also have a 'Knowledge Base' that includes directions for many modifications like ATX to MTX swap, timing belt, header install, clutch repair, etc.
