What year did they change?

Well this seems to be a bit of a gray area, so hopefully someone can help. As some of you may have seen my previous post about a 98 to 98, 2.4 to 2.4 engine swap. Well on that note I was wondering if its possible to do a 2.4 to 2.4 from a 98 sunfire to a 00 cavy?

I am aware something was changed engine wise around that year im just not sure what, I think I read something about the tranny changing to a getrag but is that all?

If so than can the getrag from the 00 just be bolted onto the engine from the 98 in place of the isuzu, or is there some kind of custom fab bracketry required?

I would really like to keep the isuzu tranny but that would be just a little too much work.

Thanks in advance for any input, any insight is always appreciated.

im pretty sure the transmissions all bolt up the same. i know the egr was deleted in the 99 1/2s + too. so everything is going to work the same, youll just need a few different parts from the donor car. its not a big deal or a hard swap though.

2.4s from 96-02 are all basicly the same , no matter of chevy , pontiac , olds , buick

biggest outside difference is the knock sensor and 96-98(some early 99's as rumor goes)

to swap the 00-02 getrag , see the transmission forum , there is alot you gotta replace , and mounts you gotta find , isuzu 95-99 , getrag 00-02(rumor some late 99's had them)

In a nutshell... as far as important stuff goes..

- 96-98 has EGR, 99-02 doesn't
- 96-98 intake manifold has inlet on back for the EGR, 99-02 doesn't
- 96-98 exhaust manifold has spot for EGR to pass thru head, and a square downpipe flange. 00-02 has EGR blocked off, and a triangular downpipe flange

The important one is, as Eric said, the knock sensor. The bolt is a different size on 96-98 motors to 99-02 motors. You can drill and tap for the larger bolt on the older ones... I've never gone the other way, but I suppose you could use a threaded insert to mount it. The older knock sensor has one wire, ground thru the mounting bolt. The newer knock sensor has two wires, one signal and one ground. I don't know if you can just re-wire the plug to make them work with each other, never got to try it before my 98 trans went and I swapped out the 2.4L for a 2.2L Eco. (Yes, I was going to try it... but it didn't happen).

If you have the 98 motor, just swap the 00 stuff onto it... manifolds, transmission, etc. Then you don't have to change anything like trans mounts or downpipe, etc.
