If i was to replace the engine on a 2003 2.2 ecotec cavalier would that mean due to the new motor having a different bcm/ecu that the odometer mileage would say what the new motor has or would it still have the cars original miles?
Well i am taking it in because it is under warrenty so i figure if its free ill let them do the work
But i want the mileage to be what is on the new motor and im not sure if a motor swap through a shop would pertain them swapping a bcm or not?!?
if a dealer is doing it, the milage should be what is on the new motor, unless you tell them you want something different...is it a dealer or a mom and pop shop..
Its a auto shop not a dealer, pretty much just a local shop unless speedy is everywhere lol. I dont know if they replace the bcm or not i will have to ask, if they do not, i will order one cause i want it to show what is on the motor rather than on the car =P

Check your local title laws before doing this. While that may be what YOU want, the state may want the mileage of the vehicle to be correct on your title as it pertains to the VEHICLE not the engine. Changing the BCM out because you want a different mileage may constitute odometer fraud if you sell the vehicle later as "actual mileage", and may significantly reduce (not that it's much anyway) the value of the vehicle if you put "not actual mileage" on the title.

^ VERY IMPORTANT piece of information left by Shifted!!
My friend just dealt with an odometer fraud nightmare for about 3 months. Long story short, he bought a car out of state from a private owned dealer..car was a salvage that was rebuilt and re-titled through this dealer. What he didn't know at the time was that when the engine was replaced, the displayed mileage was of the new motor, not the car's actual mileage. He recently traded that car into a dealer here in PA, then after the dealer did some research on the car's title, they came back after my friend for odometer fraud. As Shifted said, be sure to check your local laws VERY CAREFULLY before you make a decision.

true. more than likely they will keep the milage of the car not the new motor. you'll have to keep track of it by knowing how many miles are on it. just because you swap a motor in a car with 100 miles on it doesnt mean the car only has 100 miles on it.
what AWD said holds very true
when I did the Eco swap in my old '98, I swapped EVERYTHING over anyway so the BCM reading was true to everything but the chassis itself.. when I sold it tho, I told my friend the actual mileage that should be on it just to be on the safe side.. but I can understand what you mean by wanting it to reflect the engine mileage, but you gotta remember that there's so much more to it than a motor alone..
and really, if a shop is shady enough to wanna assist in odo fraud, I'd be wary of them anyway... just sayin...
