Ok boys and gals...thinking caps...Ill shoot it to you straight i need help bad...Im losing engine coolent...(not cool)...its not too fast takes some time...good size puddles underneath the car, lets say a newspaper folded (from like those blue boxes u put change in)...location is below the serpentine belt...also i have SEVER dampness under the Drivers side mat...
heres the kicker...Car sounds fine..purrs like a kitten..
Engine temps...rise above normal only really when at idle for 2-3 mins (once warm)
Coolent light does come on and off...(but more ON then off) make sense?
car has 102,000 miles on her...nicely driven too....PLEASE tell me shes gonna be ok
if the floor is that wet, 9 chances out of 10 the heater core is gone, and if its leakign under the serpentine belt, id also suspect your water pump is going too
What's the heatercore and/or water pump, Alex. I'll take name that smell for $100, please.

What is the Waterpump.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
you better pray its just the heater core. if its the water pump your @!#$. they are a bitch in the 2.4's and its gonna cost a good bit of money to replace
The heater core would leak on the floor of the car not outside right ? Thats how it is on every other car I've seen them go bad in.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
yup thats why we're all pretty sure it is the heater core.
ok...when i get a chance i will look behind the carpet...thanks for the quick replies....anybody got pics/directions how to fix this?
how much is this gonna cost me basically?...cause im in college and have little funds...
sometimes you can by pass the heatercore until you get it fixed.
Does the heater work?
Can you smell a funny smell when you turn the AC knob to hot?
you need to take your car for service to make sure is just the heatercore or waterpump or maybe both.
My heater works just fine...and there is NO odd smells...
Wait a sec guys now I'm confused. how could it get underneath the car near the serpintine belt also from the heater core ? It sounds like you have TWO seperate leaks.
The heater core and the water pump.
I mean if I'm missing something guys by all means correct me! But how is coolent gonna get under the car near the belt from the heater core ? Thast gotta be the water pump right ?
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
I agree with Jackalope, TWO seperate leaks, heater core and water pump. Since one leak is inside the car, and the other is outside the car.
that's why I think he needs to take his car for service because we can't tell if its the water pump or the heater core
Ok i looked today under the hood again...in some day light which was nice...whatever is leaking.... is leaking all over the AC compressor...like its has to be above it i guess cause u can see stuff all over it....another good size puddle under the car again today...most of it was towards that side but directly under the long piece that connects the two tires.(i could see some drops formed, yet hadnt fallen)
im at school...so getting the car in for service doesnt look like its happening soon...i just gotta do my best till i can get her in....
Thanks for all of your guys input...
Thats the water pump. The water in the car is the heater core. Sorry for all the bad news

i would check the thermostat housing department you could of hit maybe road kill or something which could have caused it to bend the elbow or the flange ! also if its your heater core check to see if you get heat through your vent if not bad HC and if you see steam rolling out of your vents bad HC and like bagged cavy said if its the water pump @#$% is right you might as well go ahead put secret cams and ajustible cam gears a racing head and timeing chain with new giudes and tensioner while you take that !@#$ apart lol just a little advice

Check at the top of 2.4 engine just below the power steering pump, black outlet housing temp sending unit screws into it, may just need new o-ring, my 2.4 engine started to leak from this area, took me three days to find the leak, I just got a new outlet housing and two new o-rings $30.00, And if I'm correct I belive this listed in the lemon guide for 1997 2.4.
is anything still leaking in the car?
Scott

its not gonna be the water outlet, or the temp sending unit "O" ring, b/c if it was, it would leak on the drivers side of the engine over the transmission, also allot of times, once u get that much coolant leaking out of it, your engine runs like @!#$ b/c coolant gets down into the plugs on 2.4, my own expreience
yes, inside water is heater core
in that area, u may actually just have a bad hose, check your heater hoses. your leak(s) COULD still be one if your heater hose is split, long enough for the split to be inside the car, and out side, and it may rn to one side of your engine. So check the two small (3/4") hoses that run into your firewall for splits/cracks etc...along with all your other hoses
mine was doing the same thing, sadly, it was the water pump. I just got my car back from the dealer yesterday after work. New water pump, shoe, tensenor, and timing chain. All costed me $900.77. Sucks, but had to be done, to add, i have a 98 z24 with 111,350 miles on her.
