If your ac is not on, a bypass pulley will be worthless cause to install the bypass pulley you remove your AC compressor.

When the AC clutch is not engaged, the pulley spins freely.

i took my whole ac system out in my 2200 and all i did was buy the belt for a cavalier for a non ac cavalier. i didn't need a tensioner not sure about the 2.4. check the belt routing chart maybe you can squeek it without a keeper

im pretty damn sure there is a pully replacment for it. but i remember it being listed as something else. it's like.... a water pump pully. something stupid like that. what i really want is a part number for a 2.4 without any kind of pully. i just want to eliminate the thing. if you happen to find that out POST UP! im not to worried about removing it right now though. i just moved to tampa bay florida. yea. its hot. so i'm prob just going to fix my @!#$ since it's a daily driver

the 2.4 was only offered in the Z24 and sunfire GT. because these where the top model the A/C is factory. i don't think Ive ever seen a Z24 or GT without A/C.

might try the belt off a 2.2 or 2.3 just in case it will work, or find one off another car at the wreckers, then go buy the new belt from pep boys.
my 2 cents.

There is a Bypass pulley for the 2.4l "Its on my car.", people have also ran a small belt on the OTHER side of the tensioner. Later when I get home I'll give you the p/n for both the 2.4 bypass pulley, and the belt for no pulley. All the A/C that I ripped out weighted a whopping 33 lbs. "Weight is weight right." I believe that the bypass pulley helps, I will probably just try a belt sometime mid summer.

Also I have never had a real problem with my windows defogging, unless its less than 20 degrees F outside, and snowing.

I had the same problem on my '99 Z with the grinding compressor. If you don't care about air conditioning, but also don't want to mess with taking out the ac system and having to find a bypass pulley, here is what you do. Take a flat screwdriver and pry out on the clutch plate part of the compressor (it will be painted black, while the rest of the compressor is silver). This makes it so that the clutch isn't touching the rest of the compressor, so there will be no grinding, but if you pry it out far enough, the clutch won't be able to engage, meaning no more ac.

Basically, your ac compressor will now be acting as a drive belt pulley only.
