Loud clicking behind dash. Defroster?
Monday, December 18, 2006 9:18 PM
Yesterday, completely out of the blue, a very loud clicking sound started coming from under the dash on my '05 Sport Coupe. I checked inside the engine compartment to no avail. Apparently, it's got something to do with my vent selector. The blower speed doesn't affect the sound. Key off, no sound. Key on, loud clicking. The sound stops with the selector on recirculate, but starts after a few seconds if any of the top vents, bi-level, defroster, or def/floor positions are selected. A/C on or off doesn't affect the sound.

Is there a gear or motor that drives the selector door that might be stripped? Is there any type of door position sensor that could be out of adjustment? Any quick ways to get to it before I tear down the dash? I haven't bought a shop manual yet but that's probably a good idea. BTW, the car just left the extended warranty. 60K as of last night.

I also have this problem. Does anyone have any info on this?

is it a one time click when you change selections or does it do it multiple times??

Sounds to me like you've got something in the fan maybe... but after thinking about it that "should" speed up as you increase fan speed. Hm.... You probably have something jammed/stuck in the system somewhere...

Upon cold start-ups if the cars not fully warmed up and I go to put the heat on on any position except the recirculate position, I get a repetitive fast loud clicking sound behind the dash on the passenger side like behind the glove box. The clicking does not speed up or slow down if the fan is on high or low. The clicking only goes away in two cases: 1. When its in recirculate (before the engine at its operating temp) 2: When the car is fully warmed up i can switch it any of the positions and it doesn't start clicking.

Little more info. I had this happen last fall/winter when it got cold outside. I just dealt with it since I was too lazy to rip apart my dash in the cold weather. When spring/summer came along it totally went away. So this problem occurs when its cold out.

Just for an update it's closing in on 2 years since I started this thread. The clicking comes and goes now when it wants to. It might disappear for a few weeks then come back for a few days then disappear again. I adjusted the blend door motor with a hammer but it didn't solve the problem. Until I have a better reason to pull the dash out of the car, I'm living with it. I have the radio on most of the time anyway

I just discovered that it doesn't matter if the cars fully warmed up or not it will come and go just like you said Charlie. Thanks for the update. If I ever find the problem and or a solution, I will definately update this thread with some answers.

this happened to a 05 coupe i had that was in a frontal collision.. its hte recirculator vent.. It switches from outside to inside air... i think the door was jammed and caused it to click check that out or easiest way is to take off the windshield trim piece covering the wiper system...and looking down to the intake vent and seeing if the door is moving or not
