my 91 2.2 that I just bought idles at 1200-1900. when I plug the hose going to PCV it settles down to where it should be normally, I have replaced pcv, but it still draws WAY too much Vacuum. In fact if you pull air cleaner top off and put your finger over the small crankcase hose hole it will suck your finger to it(I dont think that should be that way. My pcv goes in valve cover then a "nut"w/3 plastic fingers screws into hole and I presume holds PCV in place, there is a nipple on this "nut" that vac hose goes on. I think the vacuum is leaking around the PCV inside and is not going thru the PCV and being regulated. To make a long story short, WHAT GIVES ? Am I missing some seals on the PCV that prevent Vacuum from bypassing it?
PROBLEM SOLVED !!!!!!!
went to the junkyard and pulled one out of wrecked 91 and found a O RING around the bottom of the PCV, also one around the top, sometime in the past the former owner (or mechanic) had changed or cleaned the PCV and lost the bottom o ring, thus allowing Vacuum to get around the PCV un controlled....car runs great now!
A new PCV valve doesn't have this ring?
No it doesnt come w/the PCV. In fact the many autoparts stores around here had no idea what I was talking about. I even called the Chev dealer...they said DUH ! they finally found the o rings on valve cover pictures, but NO DEALER WITHIN 100 MILES STOCKED THEM wierd huh? I am using the one I got out of the junkyard as the generic ones from the parts store are just rubber and probably wont take the heat & oil very long...looking for a viton or silicone one to replace the used one.
hehe, I work at a company that literally has over 200 different part numbers of viton o'rings. Only problem is, they are all way too big or I'd snatch one or two for you and send 'em snailmail.
Hey, thanks anyhow..it is wierd that something so simple would be so hard to track down. On Monday I will start my search at auto parts and industrial suppliers. At least the problem is solved and maybe will help someone else.
Thanks
IT usualy is a simple fix, but most of us jusmp to a big problem first. i do at times. When i was 16, i thought i needed a tranny (slipping?) but it tund out i needed cap rotor wires and plugs haha. Stupid me i guess. Now i know better. Glad it is working
