Replacing 99z 2.4 alternator
Monday, July 16, 2007 9:11 AM
Hello...does anyone have any detailed instructions on how to replace the alternator on a 99 2.4z? Looks like there are only 2-3 bolts holding it down but just want to make sure i don't take off any other parts and cause more work for myself . Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

thanks whiteboyz. i'll give it a try tomorrow. will i need to remove the manifold in order to remove the alternator? looks like a tight fit but just wanted to make sure. i assume once i remove the belt and then the 3 bolts and wires, then it should slide right out...hopefully thanks again for the response.

If you have the right tools you don't have to remove the manifold.

But removing the mani aint bo big thing.
Esp with an aftermarket intake, it goes pretty quick.

it takes a really long wrench to loosen the belt tentioner. i couldnt do it with my set of sockets and ended up paying to get it done.

I use a 15mm box wrench, with another (usually 18mm) box wrench locked against it to get the tensioner off. Good time to replace the belt... but it's easier to get the new (usually tighter) belt on from the bottom... take the wheel well liner out to get it.

There are three bolts for sure.. one downwards and two inwards... did that make sense?

you dont need to take out the manifold. you have to do a little maneuvering but it will come out. Lenko is right about the wrenches , but i would have someone help me because you dont want to slip with the wrenches and lose some teeth.

I just replaced mine about 2 months ago. I loosened the mounts for the various hard lines running through that side of the engine bay. The alt will just barely sneak by the manifold and radiator lines. I could not get a new belt on for the life of me, so I just put my old belt back on. I just used a normal 15mm wrench to move the tensioner around.

if you're not replacing the belt use a couple zip ties to hold some pressure on it to keep it in place while you're messing with the alternators.

3 bolts is right, two vertical and one horizontal. You only need to take out the horizontal and one of the vertical bolts the other just loosen it a bit.Carefull with the wire harness those wires are thin.

After 2 1/2 hrs, i managed to get the alternator out. Wasn't that bad at all. Took a lot of time trying to figure out how to get the alternator out in the tight space. I ended up removing the overflow reservoir and that gave me just enough room. Car is back and its running smoothly. Thanks guys for the help. The advise above really helped. Gotta love the org

There is just one side bolt, right? I can't get at that thing for the life of me. I got the two top ones and got the belt off and subsequently the alt jiggles around a bit now, but it looks like I can't get at that side one with the 15MM because the standard socket wrench tends to rub right up next to one of the belt retainers. I need a small socket with a 15MM to get it out.

Assuming I find that, is it hard to get that belt back on? I have no idea how I'll do that, and God forbid I rip it or something puting the alternator back in. Someone said puting a new belt on is hard? How hard is that?
