2003 2.2 Eco Fuel pump issues-looking for service procedures
Monday, September 17, 2007 11:50 AM
I'm new to this forum but I can already see that about a million people have already had this same problem of their fuel pump dying around 60K miles (mine too!)

I just got word that the shop can't fix it for any less than $600. Already checked around at other places too and got quotes for $700 and $900. So apparently these a-holes need all the money they can get for all the crack they are smoking so I decided to fix it myself.

I am looking for service/repair procedures for this, I figure since so many have already had this issue it should be online here somwhere but I can't find it. I'm pretty unfamiliar with repair of chevy's as well as any modern vehicle. The cavalier is my daily driver (and I love it) but I normally only work on older Chryslers....cant get much more different than that

I have the tools and the parts and everything I need to fix it. I know I can purchase a manual, I am just looking to see if it is online here somewhere as well as any tips anyone has who has already done it themselves

THANKS!

Raise the car in the rear,
Loosen:
One (1) 10mm bolt for Evap Canister,
16mm wrench and 21 mm wrench for the fuel filter,
One (1) 8mm (or a flat head) for the hose,
One (1) 10mm for the fuel filler neck holder (optional),
Two (2) 13mm bolts for the hangers,
Drop tank,
Unplug electrical harness,
Twist Camlock,
Pull out pump.

Reverse process for install.

New pumps run about $250. Shouldn't take more than an hour or two...

Not that I know of. Honestly, when you get under the car, it will become very obvious to you.

One thing I failed to mention, make sure you pull your fuel pump fuse in the engine bay first, then turn the key to the "On" position. This should de-pressurize the fuel lines so you don't get fuel spraying all over the place/you.

Can one install an in-line pump instead?

my suggestion,
if the pump is not totally fried and the car still drives. drive the car almost completely out of gas. the less gas in the tank the better when you drop it.

I just did this. Make sure you have somebody with you especially if you still have half a tank of gas. It gets heavy quickly when you're holding it up by yourself and trying to make it fit right again. I used a jack with a piece of 2x4 on it to keep the tank held up in some parts.

I am about to do this on my sister's car. It looks like the heat shield has to be removed. Any ideas?

I'm having a problem getting my tank out on my 03 cavalier . Both bolts are out and it is stuck on the drivers side. I have the passenger side hanging down about a quarter of the way. What is keeping it from hanging up in there ?
