Been out of town and i have a fair weather car. So anyways I finished up the water pump replacement, and decided to replaced timing chain, tensioner and shoe. Chain was a little stretched, shoe a little worn, not bad and old tensioner performed like the new replacement. No issues going together (well other then a leaky original radiator drain plug). The tensioner released and popped up ok, I put some idling time, maybe a good 20 mins verifying coolant level and no leaks and or any other problems. All is well. Took it out for a 40 mile cruise last night, ran good, smooth and quit.
So I decide to drive it to work today 13 mile one way trip. Fired it up and now it seems like a little excess noise from valve train, I am thinking timing chain tensioner. Although it does not get any louder, pitch doesn't change with varying the throttle (figured I would hear the chain slap). It is still running good, do not want to rip on it hard until I am certain on the noise.
I am going to stethoscope it tonight to isolate, any good way to check the tensioner without tearing all back apart?
the stupid new tensioner broke. It lasted a whopping 63 miles, OEM GM part. Sheeze I should have bought the cheaper Cloyes or not replaced it. Boys at the local dealer said they would warranty it. Guess it is better then replacing that pump again.
PM= preventive maintenance
PM=problem making I guess, arg!!
If ya get from local auto parts store, like O'Reily's, NAPA.. Check for availability, advance,autozone will have to order in most cases
off the top of my head
pump $53
thermostat $9
chain $ 33
tensioner $33
tensioner shoe $8
damper pulley seal $8
radiator drain plug $5
2 gal dex-cool antifreeze $19
misc shop supplies $5
Don't forget to change oil when done.
dealer will be more unless you get all the parts at jobber price. I buy from dealer (old sponsor of mine)
You can go search online from gmpartscheap.com, probably better then standard dealer price.
if your not a novice wrencher and have tools, it is not to bad. Make sure you got a shop manual. As the o'l saying goes "can't tell all the players without a program"
hey i was thumbing through and saw your post. my 96 cavi 2.2 just had timing hardware replaced. the previous owner used cloyes parts. but my problem is that it rattles once the engine is warm. its not really bad but its noticeable . was wondering if thats what yours did? i dont understand how engine temp effects the tensioner. if you can help me out at all id appreciate it. thanks a bunch.
You might run into the problem of people wanting to sell you a rebuild kit (the gears and everything) instead of just the parts you need. Orilies was the only place that I found that would sell me all the parts individually. if that happens just keep looking around.
Also if your talking abut a 2.4, replace the chain cover gasket with a heavy felpro one while your in there.
