posible coil or timing chain issue
Tuesday, October 23, 2007 6:32 PM
i drove my car home from work plenty of power no mis-firing and i got to my parking stall at my apartment shut it off and went inside an hour later i came back out to go some place and the car wouldn't start , it turned over fine i pulled a plug and it looked perfect later (when my GF got home with my other car) i went and got some gas thinking maybe my gauge was off but still no go and now i have no spark if my timing chain broke would i have spark or is this a common issue of the coils.

Sounds to be you could have a bad coil pack, If you got a a digital multi test unit, Will help you out getting youre readings to see if there is any current flowing through it.

Good Luck.

You should have spark with a broken timing chain, the ECM gets its spark info from the crank sensor, I agree with Rich Weeks, check out your coil pack!

This is my 5 cents worth, (normally is would be 2 cents worth but I have adjusted it for inflation)

Car I drive:
99 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L 5 spd man (My daily car)
98 Ford Escort ZX2 4 spd auto

thats what i thought but is it possible for them both to crap without warning cuz i have no spark from all 4 cyl

i have to replace my valve cover gasket any way so i will have my GF turn it over and make sure everything is ok cuz it has over 170,000 on it and for all i know it is the original timing chain and coils .

what should the coil packs be reading if they are in good condition? And can you mabye give a number of about what they would be reading if they were getting kinda weak? I suspect my coils are weakening.

well it was the cps (crank position sensor) $8.70 to bad i listened to the ppl at auto zone and bought an icm cuz there crappy test machine told them it was bad , then it told them the one i bought was bad then it told them the new one off the shelf was bad to and they all failed the exact same areas of the test

well sorry to sat that was short lived the day after i typed this my car died again but i replaced the cps and wiggled the ignition fuse and it started right up then 2 weeks later it crapped a little more permanently, so i have replaced the cps again and the engine computer and the gauge cluster and i just wont start it turns over fine and everything the fuel pump works just fine so i just don't get it something has been blowing my crank position sensors i thought it was the computer so any ideas ?

p.s. i picked up a truck in the mean time so i don't need the car so soon like the last time but now i wasted all the money that could have been put into a swap so that is no longer even a thought

Sounds like the ICM to me. No spark, but you have fuel. I recommend going to a junkyard and get one, cheaper and you know it worked. Autozone ppl dont know there a$$ from their face, they are just wannabe mechanics. Everytime they have give me info, it has been wrong. I could ask them for high performance valves for an RX-7 and they would probably think they could get them and sell them to me. Oh and some of you work for autozone and are offended. I DONT CARE!!

now get me my valves for my RX-7. oh and i also need a set of 11:1 comp pistions for the RX-7 too.

Disconnect the battery for 5-10 minutes, this will reset the computer.
Sometimes the computer detects the same problem even after is fixed unless you reset it.

[and wiggled the ignition fuse and it started right up ]

You could just try to remove the ignition fuse, clean/burnish the contact surfaces with a scotchbrite pad and replace the fuse.

Try again and see if it makes any difference---but investigate the +12 volts from/through the ignition fuse anyway.

You may be getting a bad contact here and the voltage spike is damaging the sensors.

{My '93's Daytime Running lights once failed to come on, cleaning as above and they have not failed since}

well its been over a year since my cavy died and soon i will need to start working on it again as soon as my Camaro is done so does anyone have any thoughts so far i have checked the fuel(comes up fine) injectors are good. coils are good ecu is good i swapped the pcm and checked the wiring harness and have found nothing i have put four crank position sensors in it cuz they seemed to be blowing out is it possible that the piece on the crank that makes the sensor is busted or hitting the sensor.

also i spoke with the head service tech at the local chevy dealership and the only thing he could think of was maybe a bad ground nut i also went through and searched through that and found no ground issues now i have the front of the car half torn apart and will be rebuilding the motor b4 putting it back in cuz i have a bad rear main also i had a lot of sludge in the crank position sensor if that might spark any other ideas
