Popping noise on left turn.
Wednesday, May 21, 2008 6:47 AM
Hello, i have a 2000 Z24 with 190,000kms. Recently when i turn left i noticed a popping noise, it only happens when im turning left and go over a bump. It can also do it if i go over a large bump in the road going straight.

Sounds like its coming from the front drivers side of the car. I was worried it could be a CV joint or Wheel bearing.. but could it be a strut? what do you guys think?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Check the ball joint. Your wheel bearing will most likely make a humming noise if its bad, thats what mine did.

i know it may sound stupid... but re-torque your lugs... that has been a problem for me for a while...

I currently have the same problem as you, it also happens when i accelerate and turn left, normally if i accel slightly harder then usual. I would also recommend checking cv joints/shafts.

I wouldn't think it would be strut related, i recently replaced my struts due to old ones being shot which fixed that problem but the popping problem is still there so i wouldn't think it would be strut related.

Based on my experience with 2 of these cars, my guesses would be (in order of probability):
Strut Mount
Sway bar bushing
Control arm bushing
Ball joint
Tie-rod end

By strut mounts started doing this about 3 years ago, and now also make noise every time I turn at low (parking) speeds (pops and clunks).
I've had the rest of the front end checked out, and it's definitely the source of the noise. My brother's Sunfire was also starting to do this, but we put some ATF in the tops of the strut mounts, and within a day, the noise mostly vanished. Unfortunately, mine was too far gone for that to help much, but I've had success with another friend's Sunfire doing this also. Just pour it into the center of the strut mount and let it work its way through. Once the level drops, add a little more. Just don't park over a nice driveway for a day or so - it will drip.

Let us know if this helps. I would certainly get the ball joint checked out as well, if you're not sure how to do it yourself. You certainly don't want that to come apart when driving! Fortunately, from what I've seen these don't seem to typically cause many problems with these cars. Certain Honda and Ford products on the other hand...

^^agree with that.
Likely the strut mounts, the fluid is just like any wd-40 kinda repair, but replacement is the only way to correct it.
Bad news is they are expensive.

same issue here
sorry to start up an older thread.
I've noticed my front end starting to clunk within the last week. New struts but same mounts, so I am wondering if this is my issue. The car just rolled 100,000 miles. Anything I should look for if I do an inspection while I have it up?
The clunk is quiet yet, but I can feel it when I have my foot on a pedal.
