Wrapping up a water pump project on my wife's '96 2.4L. Autozone sold me both a "gasket/seal" (even though it is round, rubber and looks like an o-ring) and an o-ring (smaller cross-section diameter than the other o-ring) with the thermostat.. My Chilton's is showing only one o-ring - the larger of the two - and shows it going on top of the thermostat. Problem is, on this car that o-ring was actually *under* the thermostat.
1. Can somebody please confirm the big "o-ring" goes on *top* of the thermo (ie. between the thermo flange and the upper housing)
2. What's with the mystery small o-ring?
Thanks much,
Matt
I would say put it back together the way it came off. It was working before, right??? Double check for leaks.

Dunno. If I put it back that way, I'm relying on metal-metal contact to seal the flange - it just doesn't seem right. I'm wondering if perhaps the PO had some work done that I'm not aware of.
I've never seen 2 O-rings when dealing w/ my thermostat..
But, the seal for my 97 2.4 goes AROUND the thermostat.. The O-ring has a slice around the inside of it which wraps around the thermostat...
I would check to make sure you have the right part if yours is different.
Yep - I just figured that out. Seal has a groove in the middle, and the thermo flange sits inside it. Seal thus provides a top and bottom seal. The other o-ring appears to be for the water outlet from the block, on the other side of the engine.
Thanks for your help.
The smaller one may be for the little tube that crossed the back of the motow, from the water outlet. its small like maybe you pinkie in size. that all i can think of other than that whole project is a headache
