I know how to take the engine out along with the trans. But how would I take it out without removing the trans?

Car is a 2000 - 2200 - Auto.

I just did this in my 2000 2200 auto sunfire. just unhook all the wires on the engine, fuel lines or you can just ublot the rail and lay it out of the way. Go under the car where the tranny bolts to the block there will be a black cover with i think 3 or 4 8mm screws. Take that of then you will see the flywheel.

You will have to take a big flat head or prybar and stick in the teeth on the fly wheel to turn it while using a fashlight looking between the oil pan and flywheel for a 17mm bolt. There will be 3 of them. after that is done take out the 6 or 7 tranny to motor bolts and unbolt the upper motor mount and lower dog mount.

Put a jack under the tranny and hook the hoist to the engine. Jack the hoist up a lil bit till it starts taking weight of the front end. Take a pry bar and pry the tranny apart. You might have to raise the side of the motor with motor mount up first at a angle. But try straight up first while someone prys on the tranny so the nipple thing sticking out of the tourqe converter clears the fly wheel. Also watch and make sure the intake manifold clears the cowl.

Not hard at all i put the motor back in by myself in probably 20 mins if that.

Is there enough clearance between the inner passenger fender well and the crankshaft pulley to pry apart the motor and trans in a manual shift car to clear the clutch from the bellhousing? Or do I have to remove the pulley for an extra inch or 2.

there is enough room w/o removing the pulley

It's easier to use a 1 1/8" socket on the drive belt pulley on the P/S of the engine instead of trying to turn it with the flywheel. Don't use a pry bar between the block and the transmission. The transmissions are cast aluminum and you risk breaking the case. Once you have all the bolts out that hold the 2 together, just rock the engine with the engine crane and they will pop apart.
