Hey everyone! I'm having a little trouble ith my 04 Cavy 5spd. No, it's not the usual idle dropping off when the clutch is depressed. It's quite the opposite actually. Tonight I was heading to my parent's house and down shifted for a corner I knew was coming, but to my surprise the car sped up without my foot on the accelerator! I don't know what's going on but when I got to Mom and Dad's the idle was sitting stable at 2700-ish RPM. I'm not sure of the cause of this, but any help / knowledge would be appreciated. Presently the Cav is over at their house resting until we can get it either fixed or looked at by the dealer.
happens to my car sometimes....i have the SAME car as you basically. For somereason it only happens when i downshift and im a little off with the clutch (cant explain it sorry....=\ ) i come to a stop and it idles kinda high but it usually goes back to normal. Only happens when i downshift and i am coming to a stop and im not "perfect" with the release of the clutch...weird problem but it always goes back to normal so i never think nothing of it.....as a matter of fact happened to me today and i can go to my car now and it will idle normal. If you are experiencing the same thing i wouldn't worry to much about it..........GL
This wasn't just a few seconds of weird idle, this is 25 minutes of driving and idle holding 2700RPM with the clutch depressed. I'm guessing a sensor is bad, but I'm not sure where to start.
Mine does the same thing some times. Check you throttle cable every now and then mine sticks just enough to stick the RPM's at about 2500. Other than that NO idea. Hope this helps.
I would take a look at any vacuum lines that are attached to the intake - especially the one for the power brakes. A large vacuum leak can have the same effect as holding the throttle open.
The IAC motor may also be stuck, but I didn't think it would have the ability to put the RPM quite that high. A scan tool would be handy to see what the count is for it so that you know what it's trying to do, but most of us don't have this luxury.
Any type of opening in the intake can cause this to happen (crack, loose throttle body), but before going too far, try disconnecting the throttle cable to make sure that it isn't holding it open. One way or another, too much air is getting in there, and the computer is just adding the fuel to go with it. If it just suddenly happened, I would still suspect a vacuum leak. If you can't find anything, you can also try disconnecting and plugging any lines that are there (just for diagnostic purposes). An internal leak in the brake booster could cause this too, so that would be the first one I would check if the lines all appear intact.
Let us know what happens.

I just started having a similar problem with my '03. Read on another thread that disconnectin gthe battery cable for ten minutes or so seems to fix the problem.
It did not for me. But mine only goes high idle after driving for 1/2 hour or more. But if I shut it off and restart it, back to normal again.
A couple other people said to check the IAC as well. I'm gonna put some seafoam in my tank this weekend and run it, and maybe dump some into my intake tube.
I'll let you know how I make out with that.
I had this same issue with my car, even though it's a 2.4. It turns out it was the TPS sensor. So you might want to look into that...
I'm going to try to get the sensors read this weekend @ Advance Auto, and a liberal dose of seafoam into the TB to clean it out
Try disconnecting the battery too for an hour or so. My 2.4L has/will do the same thing and that always seems to fix it. I'd still like to figure out WHY it happens and fix the underlying problem but as of yet I haven't figured it out.
I never had this problem on my sunfire but I did on my neon srt-4. It's a very common thing for them and Dodge even makes a kit to fix it. For them it was caused by crappy wires to the TPS sensor. I repaired the wires and soldered them together and it ran better but still popped up once/week or so, but a lot better than a few times a day. So I think checking out the TPS would be a good start.

OK IAC reads normal counts, but of course it is idling correctly at the time.
Took apart the IAC and cleaned the seal surface as well as the plunger shaft and receiver section last night.
Lubed with some white lithium grease and reassembled.
This morning I had no idling issues, but only time will tell.
If it doesn't act up again by the end of the week I'm calling it fixed
My car is still screwed up. It idled so high to a point today where it fouled the plugs when I shut it off. I put a new TPS in and it did nothing. Same thing. What I did figure out is that when I disconnected the TPS, the idle went down to where it should be. I plugged the sensor back in and the RPMS still stayed low. So I disconnected the battery and it will sit overnight. We'll see what happens tomorrow. I can't find a vacuum leak anywhere. If it does it again, to the dealer it goes. Have a suspicion it's the PCM but have no way to confirm it.
Ok so mine has been pretty good for the most part but I still have the problem now and then. I guess I'll have to check the wires next, if not that then I guess I'll have to get a new TPS
Any luck finding what the problem is yet? I've had these problems for over a year now and still haven't been able to figure it out. I was told to try replacing the MAP sensor or the TBS sensor.....
I've done the below with no luck
1.) Removed TPS and cleaned
2.) Pull the IAC and cleaned
