how to bleed clutch slave cylinder

i see how you bleed the line going to the slave... but there is nothing on the slave itself allowing you to bleed the air out of it.

i am just curious as to how that would work, you might get the line nice a full and airless... but you are still pushing against a cylinder full of air that you cant bleed out....

this would be like putting on new brake calipers, but not bleeding aftrwards.... yeah the lines may be full... but the caliper is not. so you are still going to get tons of compression and a spongey pedal.

The haynes manual says nothing about bleeding the cylinder, just the lines.

I put a brand new cylinder on my car when i built my engine and slapped it all back together and put it in the car and after a few pumps the pedal came right up. but the next morning i stepped on the clutch and it went right to the floor.... and looking under the car i had a nice big puddle of brake fluid under my tranny. So i wonder if the AIR pressure that built up in the cylinder caused the slave to pop and leak.

now i need to pull my tranny and replace the slave... but want to make sure the same thing doesnt happen to the next one i put in..... or to the next person who tries this...

So can someone please tell us how to bleed the air from the slave. or explain why we dont need to do that?

on the slave cylinder, next to the line going in, there's a bleeder. it sticks out of the trans, real easy to see. i dont know what other bleeder you could be thinking of, as its the only one on the slave, and it works...

I am aware of that bleeder... but that is hooked to the line, before it even gets to the slave cylinder. That is the one i am talking about that will bleed the lines... but i dont see how that will help get any air out of the rest of the slave cylinder itself that is inside the tranny well past that bleeder.

if you look at any other bleeder on anything else... it is always at the VERY end of the whole fluid system... a setup like this would be like putting a bleeder on the frame of the car between the hard line and the rubber hose... yeah it would bleed all the hard lines, but wouldnt help get air out of the rubber hose or the caliper itself... that is my point.

so i was wondering if there is something else on the slave itself somewhere. this bleeder we are both talking about is clearly on the line itself.. (when you disconnect the line, the bleeder stays on the line side.)

That bleeder beside the line is actually coming out the opposite side of the slave cylinder....

and how exactly does that work???? i didnt really inspect it too closely... but i only saw what looked like one hole in the end of that connection, and just and o-ring sealing it... so how does this both feed the slave and return to the bleeder?

(this is a 2002 z24.. 2.4L engine and the getrag tranny... i know the older clutch slaves look different and appear to have 2 lines... mine is just a big plasticy thing...

if that link doesnt work... look up part number LSC325 on autozone.com

oh boy.... now i am really screwed....

Just went in to autozone and told them of my misfortune, and they were cool about it, they said they would special order one for me right away, and they wouldnt charge me, or need the busted part until the new one came in...

well they went to order it... and of course "no stock at any store" (cuz you know, who owns a cavalier, its not like it is a common car or something.) but this is how it was before too... so we go to special order it.... "out of stock at warehouse" and something about the manufacturer discontinued the product or something.... so autozone cant even PLACE an order unless they have something to order. So the dude is like "wow that sucks, i dont know what to tell you, i cant even order you a new one till they put a replacement in the system, and that could be a long time..."

He tells me "well if you bring me the busted one in, i can give you your money back and you can buy one somewhere else..."
the one i bought was $155 and had a lifetime warranty. so it was cheap and covered... (but alot of good lifetime warranty is on a part they dont have anymore)

so i head to the dealership... $300+ for a GM one. and it is special order... and could take over a week. and only has a 1 month warranty

so i call advanced, they want $235 for one, 3 month warranty, and also a special order.

I can buy a whole clutch kit including slave for that much!!! and probably get it sooner too!!!

which is exactly what i would do. if the old one was leaking, the clutch is no good.
