Hey everyone.
I don't post here much, but I thought you guys would like to know this little piece of information.
The backup lights recently stopped working on my 2004 Cavalier 5spd. After checking the bulbs and fuse, I figured it was the backup switch. I went to Chevy and talked to a technician that I know over there, and he came up with the same diagnosis. I ordered the part and it came in today. List is $37, I got it for $31 because I paid for it under the company I work for, Porsche of Huntington.
I bring the switch to work and show it to one of the guys and they tell me that it looks the same as the backup switch on the 996's.
Sure enough, I got and look at one in stock, and it's the same switch. Unfortunately, it was special order, and not returnable.
New in the bag, my old one on the right. I didn't even think to post about this until I already had the new one in the car.
If you need a backup switch for a Getrag 5spd equipped car, go get it from your local Porsche dealer for $20 less than Chevy charges.
It's Porsche part number
996-606-103-01.
They usually go bad at 4-5 years old in the 911, so it would probably be the same for ours too.

Considering that Getrag is the OEM transmission for many car manufactures in Europe, including Porsche, I'm not suprised at all. Nothing in that thing is from GM, hence it's strength.
There's a rumor that even the clutches are similar to Porsche parts.
I used to race cars, now I race myself.

I'll have to keep this in mind...my 04 cav 5spd needs the same part.
Wow, now I can say I drive a Sunfire with an Italian made transmission, from the same company that builds Skyline GT-R tranny's; using some of the same parts as Porsche's.
I'm a 6ft. tall, 250+ lb., man, and I proudly drive the Sunfire. My wife drives the half-ton 4x4...
how do you take that part off the engine? What kind of tool do you use or does that plastic piece slide off?
Open ended wrench. Maybe even deep socket.
^Sorry I was wrong, you dont take it off the engine.
ya you do. That part listed above goes into the engine. And open end wrench will do, because that whitish/yellowish plug doens't look like it will come off to use a socket. Do i have to worry about any oil coming out?
seems to me that it goes into the drivers side of the transmission ,,not the engine,,and its most likely a 14 mm wrench
Yea, it goes into the drivers side of the tranny housing. You just jack your car up and take the tire off and its right behind the spindle. Anyone off hand remember the oem number from gm for it??

Nevermind I got it. But anyways NAPA doesn't have a listing for one at all...but I did some researching and found a matching part number. Its NS6538 ...and its around 25 bucks.
