looking for some help on a big problem
Saturday, September 06, 2008 9:03 AM
well driving around last night, raining out so i wasnt even getting on it. i left a stop light just fine then my car started to bog. when away for a second, then started doing it again when i went to give it gas. then the rpm just started to drop and the car died and wont start. it started for a second, then it died. starts for a sec just fine then cuts rpms out. but it almost was like ign. cut because it smelled hella rich. so i think its something electronic. it seems to move air just fine. has gas, good battery, i cant find any sensors unplugged, no check engine lights. just the normal batt.,oil, and in my case air bags light. when the key is foward. i can not figure it out. it has NEVER done anything like this before. the only problem i ever had was the iat went bad about a year ago. my mods are

intake
mounts
2-1/4 manifold back exhaust, 1 resonator, no cat(antifouler trick), greddy exhaust
air bags removed along with under seat control unit(hit 3 deer a year and a half ago and they didnt deploy so i yanked the @!#$ for a aftrmrkt st. wheel and dvd in pass ab spot)
battery in trunk. 2g and 0g for wiring
jvc headunit
not going to bother listing the ext. stuff

most mods are over a year old. the most recent being the head unit. but i have had like 4 aftrmrkt and the stock cd player in and out of it tons of times. i removed my cat about a month ago and used 2 anti foulers before the o2 sensor first one normal and the second one to go in was drilled out to fit the sensor inside it(trick the evo guys use).

any help would be greatly appreciated

Well my fuel pump went out, about two months ago and I thought it was electrical,I was thinking it was the module but it wasnt,i turned the car on and didnt here the fuel pump at all,so I had to pay $250 for a new fp and had to take the whole gas tank out and everything. How it happend-I was at the store and I killed it and when I came back out side to start it,it would turn over and run for like a couple seconds then die.So I had to get my dad to tow me home and once I fixed it it ran fine, but for some reason when I fill it up the gas gauge doesnt go over half a tank?I was thinking maybe the float,But oh well.So I hope this helps.Get someone to turn the key on,then listen by the tank to see if the FP is coming on.

Hum dont know about that.My car has close to 137,000 and doesnt make that noise, but sometimes when I turn my car over,it makes a weird noise when the starter is turning it makes like a quick knock noise, and sometimes it will be turning over and the starter will just slowly turn in one spot then keep turning over?I dont know what it could be.

go to autozone and they will run the code for free,I got them to run my code cause my ce light came on and it was just a IAT sensor.

spark plugs maybe?

i was having a similar problem, it would start to bog really bagfqd around 2000rpm and once I hit 2500 it would start dropping rpm. I had a cheaper set of autolites from wal mart...i went to Advance Auto and bought the more expensive AC Delco (they are like $10 each, but its what GM recommens as an OEM replacement) and I haven't had the problem since. Someone later told me that the cheaper ones don't hold up as well and as for long in ecotecs.

Weird thing is that when I pulled the old plugs out, they didnt show any problem signs (bad carbon or ash build up, etc), and they only had about 6000 miles on them...yet the car has been fine since I changed them.

i tried changing out the idi and the unit that plugs into it, as i have a spare pair but nothing happened. think it could be the plugs? because come to think of it. it cut out a little about a week and a half ago, but only for a sec then stopped.

I would say plugs are good to check and if there not too old just check the gap in them. usually out of the box the gap can be off a little so i always check it before I install them.

autolite plugs? are those not really for fords for the most part? thats what ford recomends besides motorcraft parts at least. ac delco is the way to go for our gm's and I always at least use platinum ac's but in my 05 eco I use ac delco iridium and runs great with them.

Did you get it scanned yet?

Also checked all grounds, fusable links, coolant for air etc?

And also just becuase you can hear the fuel pump doesnt mean its working correctly, my buddy down here with an 04 eco, his car wouldnt start and wasnt getting any fuel to the motor so we checked it and heard it still but wasnt flowing good enough obviously after all, we first replaced his fuel filter and nothing so put in new pump and its all good now, new pump is wayy quieter too, its nice. 234 bucks at pepboys for whole assembly, took us about 1.5 hours to do with the arizona sun in our faces. problem is he let his car run below quarter tank ALL the time, bad idea for these cars. I Always have at least half tank in both my j's.

its his fuel pump for sure its not even kicking on at all and the fuses are good along with the relays and this problem is very common on the eco cavy'sat around 40,000-80,000miles. there is the site that i found about 20 other ppl with the same problem, must be a weak fuel pump or just cheap quality that GM is using cuz this problem is happening on other GM vehicles also.

not like it matters, but my gtp had the same things happen when the fuel pump went. died once like 2 weeks before it went. thought nothing of it. then when it went. it would start. rev up 2 like 1500rpms. drop. sputter sputter sputter. die.

let us know if that is what it was!

Does it only sputter when it is raining? I just had the same problem on my 97 2.2 changed plugs and wires and all is good now.
