Ok i just noticed a small crack in my CV boot... and noticed a lil ring of grease around the wheel well area...
this is brand new... and not even the grease on the boot is dirty yet....
i just need to fix this and get some grease back in there....
I looked at autozone, and they only make a "universal CV boot" for my car... and i dont even know if this comes with grease...
So is there anywhere that makes a CV boot designed for cavy's and what kinda grease goes in the outter CV? i need to get that sucker filled back up... can i use like a synthetic wheel bearing type grease? or do i need special CV grease?
(and yes i searched, but didnt get any answers i didnt already know... i dont need (or want) to replace the CV yet (you cant buy mine for $100 at autozone) and this is all brand new and fresh... so i should be safe with a replacement boot and repacking the CV)

go to advance. NEW axles are $70, no core, lifetime warranty. not just your axle, EVERY cv axle they sell. its also $60 for a reman with $35 core. there really is no way to tell how long its been cracked. you usually have about two days from time of initial crack to needing to replace the whole axle.

yeah problem with that is that my CV's are DSS Level 3 CV's rated for 500hp... cost about $1200 a set... So that might explain why i dont exactly want to "replace" them with a $70 advanced autoparts special... no matter how good the warranty is.
I just put the axles on a week ago... they were perfectly clean then. since i put them on i have only driven 30 miles, all on back roads under 45mph.
So i think it is pretty safe to assume this is all pretty recent.
as i mentioned, even the grease on the boot is still clean...
I bought the CV's used from a guy on the forum here... he had them sitting in his basement for a few years... so the original warranty has run out, and i am not about to drop $1200 for a new set just cuz my boot just cracked.
so, that is the long story of why i "just want to know how to fix the boot"
well, at that point, order the boot kit. if it DOESN'T come with the grease, get a tub of grease. bingo bango bongo, out the door for $25 total, a good bit more work, but it's possible you'll be ok.

Ok, well it looks like my choices are either spend $100+ at the local shop to have a new boot installed....
or spend $20 and risk one of those "glue together" boot kits. I have heard bad things about them so i dont like the idea of putting these on my "practically new" $1200 axles....
if that glue gives loose, there goes all my grease and my CV meets a painful and near instant death....
they also make replacement OEM boots... but i dont know how many of you know what all goes into getting one of those on the shaft... but notice that the the small end is on the INSIDE of the 2 big CV's.... For those of you who watch alot of porn the term "fisting" describes it pretty well.... imagine fitting something the size of your fist through an opening designed to fit your thumb... and that is what 1 piece CV boot installation is all about.

Everything i have read including the directions that come with the new CV boots talk about a special tool to stretch the small end to fit over the CV....
So if you can remove the CV from the shaft, then that is great news for me... and that kind of info i was hoping to gain here...
but so what all goes into dissassembling the outter cv. I know the boot clamps come off, and the outter casing separates from the axle shaft and CV joint itself...
but how do you get the CV off of the axle shaft? just whack it with a hammer? or is there a special puller?
are there any sort of retainer clips or anything that need removed?
I have found write ups on this for other cars.... but nothing on cavys....
so anything you can give me would help.
There is an actual "tool" that i've used before, and fisting would be exactly what i thought the first time i did one. And you gotta use lots of lube if you know what i mean!
one way or another... i either need the "know how" to disassemble and reassemble the outter CV to "slide" the boot on... or else i need to know where i can rent that "tool" to fist the sucker on there...
i am dying here... spent the entire summer building the car, now that it is together and running i keep running into crap like this that keeps me from driving it.
Well not to be corny but as a temp fix use some permatex black silicone on the boot (clean it brake clean) apply to leak and let cure 24 hrs.This works I know on my wifes old 95 civ I did this temp for about 2 wks b4 we had new boots put on.As for the tool or clamp to tighten the clamp on the boot I do not recall seeing the tool at any store ,but then again I never really looked to hard for it to start with.Napa may carry the tool but,I doubt auto zone or advance do.
