hello all ... i blow my engine up in my 1998 cavalier and i am putting in the same engine out of my other 1998 cavalier ... it says to remove the motor i have to also take the transmission out as well ... i jsut changed my tranny and dont really want to take it out .... any possibility's i could just slip the tranny off my motor and pull it out ? i already know i have to change the flywheel because the motor i am putting in is ready for auto and mine is a 5 speed ... if theres anythign else i gotta change let me know please .... thank you in advance
I would just unbolt the whole subframe with the motor/trans etc in it and swap it out. If you need to keep that other trans you just got the still take the subframe out and swap trannies, then bolt it all back up and reconect everything again.
Just make sure you label everything with some masking tape and a marker as to what it is and where it goes, well thats how I usually do it, it makes things so much easier.
i am takign the auto tranny off and bolting the new motor up to my 5 speed i know i have to change the flywheel ... i am trying to get this done as fast as possible with the least effot
i think dropping the motor out is harder than pulling. I've dropped a 2.4 out of a cavalier and it was a pain or that's what i thought. Then i pulled the 2200 out of my 2000 sunfire i baught with a blown motor in about hour to two. And left the auto tranny in it. Pulled the 2200 out of my 99 with tranny and all in the same amount of time.
Put that 2200 in my my 2000 and had it running a driving after starting on it at 9 in the morning by lunch time. Then started on my 2.4 swap and in all honesty after i changed the mounts on the rail i had the motor in and everything hooked up in about a hour beside the exhaust, shifter, clutch pedals and all that since i did a 5 speed swap.
If i was you i would pull it all together so it would be easier to put together on the floor. If you pull it out of the top you have to remove the hood and tranny mounts on the tranny itself.
so it is possiable to pull 2.2 motor right out the top and leave 5speed tranny in there ...hummm ill tackle her tomorrow i want me cavi back badly
yes, it is possible. I just did mine bout 4 months ago and did it all by myself without and assistance needed. I have a 2001 2200 5 speed. It did take a bit of angling, had to unbolt the tranny mount and let the tranny fall down a little and pull the pass. side of the motor up to slide it out.
