Okay guys, leaving the complex today in the 97 fire, 2.2L. Car starts up and the best way i can describe the sound is like some kind of tin rattling around, pulled out of the complex to go to work and car cuts off. will crank and crank and crank but no start. On my way back to check for spark and fuel at the motor but any ideas? this is our only car right now and the two of us work all week! any input is much appreciated thanks!!!

Hmmmm, I am guessing youre timing chain broke?. Take the valve cover off see if youre upper portion if youre motor is turning. If it is youre timining chain, Or youre timing chain jumped a few teeth.

Good Luck.

will there be a way to reset timing without taking the timing cover off? if the chains not broken, will i be able to get away with just a new tensioner? thanks for the help

update> car has good spark. i pulled one of the plugs and they seem to be firing normal. from my understanding spark timing would be funny if the chain was off, right or wrong? thanks!

Update- shop pulled code T0342, said to be cam position sensor and quoted me $282.22!! I walked my lazy ass to advance auto and then another few miles back the other way by the shop, threw the sensor in and as expected nothing. Glad I didnt give them the ok for the almost $300 repair that would not have fixed my problem.

I also pulled the valve cover and cranked a few times....heard no more funny noises but also didnt see any valves opening.

Timing chain? My most logical guess now is the chain was the funny noise, it snapped and took out the cam sensor on its way...will have them look into it tomorrow as im not trying to pull a rush job on the chain and tensioner tomorrow.

98 if your right and it did end up being the chain, that snapped you'd most likely be facing a blown engine because aren't our cars if i am not mistaken interference design engines meaning if the chain snaps there is no clearance between the pistons and valves and they wind up getting destroyed beyond repair.

The 2.2L is a pushrod engine. When you start the car do you know if the engine itself is actually turning? Have someone look while you try. That sound could also have been the gear ring breaking off the flywheel. This would make a tin rattling sound as the pieces hit the bottom of the transmission casing.
