My exhaust has been saggy and keeps knocking around, so I replaced the two rubber hangers closest to the front with a pair of polyurethane universal hangers. My muffler and the back half of my exhaust is still quite saggy and apparently a "universal" insulator won't work on the one holding the muffler up and the other one in front of the back wheel well. Where can I get a replacement for this? I don't want to take it to a shop, I already installed the hard ones myself, I'd much rather just find the part online and put in myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. (car is a base 2200 Cavalier)
Here's a pic of the worn out insulator that needs replacing, thanks GM for using that weird upside-down U on the top part.
You should be able to get the whole assembly for $25-30 at a autoparts store, unbolt the 2 bolts and swap it out.

Thanks for the reply. I went by Advance and they had an assembly that looked a bit different than stock, went ahead and bought it as it was listed for an '00 Cavalier. Upon trying to install it, the hole for the muffler strap to attach (which was also included with this kit) was turned 90* from the direction it needed to go. Which sucks because this new one looked much sturdier than the stock one. Anyone ever have any luck with this? I feel silly having changed the two hardest hangers to reach, only to have this one that's in plain sight thwart me.
There are 2 style hangers, you just need the matching muffler strap for it. The one you have is alot more sturdy than the original one you have.

The one I picked up was definitely more robust than the stock one could ever hope to be. There's a NAPA in town, so I'll swing by and see if they can be of more assistance. I'm tired of my car wagging it's tail like a retarded puppy
Take the hanger with you so that they can match up what you need.

i got a set of two poly mounts just like that for mine off of ebay.
The polyurethane hangers worked beautiful up front at lifting the exhaust, I wish they would have worked at the muffler too.
Having already shopped for this item, I think it'll go a bit more smoothly next time. Yesterday I showed the guy my car and what exactly I was replacing, he had been trying to sell me a universal hanger which I told him wouldn't work. I probably won't have time to take care of this until Tuesday, I get to take the GRE on Monday.
And here's the polyurethane hangers which are a pain install, especially lying on your back, but I think well worth it:
hmm ive been having the same problem...maybe i oughta give that a try instead of my slapped together fix lol

kinda looks like mine, they work great, muuch better with my big ass 2.5" exhaust im running and heavy flowmaster muffler.

What are you using to support that muffler? Are the 03+ brackets compatible with the polyurethane hangers? Cause if they are, I'd rather use that to keep my muffler supported.
we welded the muffler to the factory bracket no bushing involved and no vibes etc. just used the one poly mount befoe the rear axle, and it lifted the whole system and reduced movement ALOT.
I wish welding it in place was an option for me. How did you do the mount in front of the rear axle? Mine has the same upside-down U thing going on that the muffler has, but I would love to get a poly on there as well because while my exhaust is stock, my suspension is not.
yea, the one before the axle is a bitch to get on, but i used some grease and some BEEF! haha took a lil while by myself but i got it on there. i bought the two pack and stil have an extra too, but when i get my cat back on my 98 im going to use it before the axle on that one as well. you use the same mount just instead of the round hole, use the middle opening, it hold REALLY good. I have checked mine every few days sincei installed mine a little ovr a month or so ago and its still as tight as when i installed it, looks good too as my color scheme is white/blue on my 05.
i have some pics, dont make fun of my welds! lol anyways this is with 2.5" piping and flowmaster super 40 muffler with 3"tip, muffler is almost heavier than me hahaha.
pics..
first pic is of how the mount was welded right onto the muffler itself..
rear shot of car so you can see how it looks from the back
this is the mentioned hanger by the rear axle, oh and you can see how low my car is
and another one of that hanger and how it went in
and here you can see how the tip sits low enough to not burn or blacken the WHITE bumper cover, but high enough to clear any road hazards etc, and looks good imo.
look at the heavy b*tch! lol
hope these help maybe??
oh and auto's ftw! you can see the front of my 98 cayenne red cav in one of the pics too
Great, thanks for the pics, I'll give that a try on the mount in front of the rear wheel. It looks a bit ghetto, but anything is better than the stretched out rubber I've got now. Just getting that part of the exhaust lifted and stabilized will help a lot. Every time I hit a bump, the rear cross member(?) bangs against the exhaust. And I promise the welds look better than anything I could do.
And I just found a 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9L for sale
so I may be putting the stock suspension back on and selling the cav sometime soon anyways.
what kind of suspension are you on? and let me know if you get rid of the cav and have any parts for sale, my 98 needs a few. i just noticed too i have to reposition that metal hanger piece a little bit to realgn it to where it goes right. so it might look a little crooked in the pics, but it doesnt rattler or hit the rear corssmember, it used to though. 2.5" plus flowmaster is super heavy! lol
I'm on a set of Gravanas that I bought used in January, at the time it had a brand new set of '99-style mounts installed. I love them, except when I hit a speedbump or pothole. It doesn't matter how slow I take it, it's going be a good little jolt. But it's so smooth and flat in the curves. Thanks for the help with the exhaust, I'll be sure to let you know if I decide to sell the suspension. Your profile says you're on Dropzone suspension, maybe you should move that to the 98 and stick the Gravanas on the 05
(they can go much lower than you see in my sig, just have to make a little room in the fender)
I'll try wrestling with the exhaust tomorrow (taking the GRE this afternoon
), and I don't really care too much if it comes out looking crooked, it's hard to see it without sticking your head under the car.
I got the hanger in front of the rear axle swapped with a blue poly one (only took a couple hours
). I noticed that the rubber one I removed had the part number on it (duh?). It's 22610677 and you can get it at GMPartsDirect for $8.79 a piece. I figured I'd order one to replace the one on the muffler and see how that works.
