also I forgot to mention that at idle there somewhat of a loud tick8ing kinda sound and when I turn my steering very slightl it goes away, could this be the tensioner or just worn out shoes? or something totally different?

I had the same loud ticking noise that went away when I turned the wheel....

A week later I had 16 bent valves.....Not sure what the noise was though or if that was the source to my problem....

I put a new head on and I'll see if the noise is stopped Monday when I get it running...

I would get yourself a auto repair manual (at the auto part store like $17), and probably replace the timing chain!!

This is my 5 cents worth, (normally is would be 2 cents worth but I have adjusted it for inflation)

Car I drive:
99 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L 5 spd man (My daily car)
98 Ford Escort ZX2 4 spd auto

Ok so I got my motor running again today and the noise is 100% gone...

Meaning the noise is definetly something to do with the timing....

Check your crankshaft bolt if you have a 1/2 torque wrench....Proper torque is 129 ft lbs then a 1/4 turn........I doubt thats the problem but it cant hurt to check.....

Mine was loose and that was the source to all my problems unfortunatly I didnt find it in time...But like I said the noise is 100% gone after putting a new head on and changing the timing components...

yours sounds like the #3 rod bearing is going start looking for a new motor

and mike thanks for the heads up I will check that crankshaft bolt asap, But I am getting all new timing chain and tensioner anyways this weekend just in case, is it a hard thing to change and is there a write up somewhere to do this?

I was told its not that hard but time consuming, the hardest part I was told is when you have to re time the timing, anyone help on this?

Hey Megatron, yeah, its not all that hard, but it is time consuming...took me and my g/f dad (master auto tech) about 5 hrs. That was for the timing, and water pump though. It definitely intimidating when you look at it, but once you get those motor mounts off, and tilt the motor, there is quite a bit of room next to that fender to work.

I got the cloyes kit off of eBay, complete kit, everything you need to do the timing for like 160 i think. A lot better than the 500 price tag on the gm stuff....plus, cloyes is the brand that jasper engines uses in its motors!

I don't know if there is a write up about the timing on here (forum), but if you go get that $20 manual, it tells you how to do it step by step...very nice...

Re-timing the whole shindig isn't all that difficult either...you pull one cam gear off at a time, replace exactly with the new one...even the manual tells you to use a small drill bit to lock the cam gears in place while loosening/tightening the bolts...etc

Hope that helps a little, good luck!

that does acutally thank you, the guy I am getting the kit from I think is made by cloyes as well, I am just worried about taking it apart and putting it all together and then something bad happens, you know? But I am sure that I will get through it ok, what would you say this project would be on a scale from 1-10 1 being easy 10 being hard for someone that has never done anything to a motor other then change the oil?

hey megatron,

Did this turn out to be your timing chain?

I"m having the same chattering, and it does slightly go away when i turn the wheel. I've been driving with it like this for a few months, but am getting ready to replace the set....if that's it.

Also,

Did you notice what was wrong with the set? was it just the tensioner? my car only has 63000 miles on it.

Did you replace the timing chain cover gaskets too?

if you have the cover off replace the gasket

I got a question. I put everything back on my motor as far as the timing chain and what not, when i turn the motor over the plunger for the tensioner goes in and out, is that correct?

my 2200 was ticking for the last 6 months with no problems, about three days ago it started to sound like candy pop rocks in a tin can. yesterday on my way to work - timing chain blew out taking my guides, tensioner and cam sensor with it...just a thought
