Car stalled than backfired going into a turn
Thursday, October 02, 2008 12:32 PM
Now I am not sure if this was just the fuel sloshing away from the fuel pump, my gauge was showing 2 notches below a 1/4 of a tank of gas, I have a sunfire cluster in my car. I was kind of aggressive going into the turn and as I came in the car started to stall dropped down to about idle, and then backfired pretty loud. I have never had anything like this happen before. I am assuming that it just starved itself momentarily but just want to check and see what anyone else thinks about this.

I just did a new fuel filter, plugs, and plug wires about 2 and a half weeks ago. I was also wondering if maybe my fuel pump might be getting weak?

01 cav, i would say it probably just starved itself for fuel temporarily, but that's just me i know years ago we had another chevy that would do that if the needle on the gas gauge was below 1/4 of a tank and you didn't take the corner by practically gliding around it the engine would stall. Would always start right back up though, i think on some of these cars if enough fuel drains away from the engine like that it will do that .

Thats exactly what my 2.4 sunfire was doing. When going around a turn the car would completely stall and i would lose power steering and almost wreck. Hope you find the problem tho, i never did.

So now I am getting the problem sometimes, when I go to pass someone or accelerate after cruising if I give if full throttle the car backfires out of the exhaust but runs fine otherwise. When I say backfires it actually pops out of the exhaust.

be careful about the backfiring out of the exhaust, i doubt your case would apply but we had a chevy years ago had a backfiring problem managed to backfire one time and blew a hole in the muffler.

Could a bad fuel pressure regulator, or a bad fuel pump cause this issue?

Well it did it twice today with a full tank of gas. I did a fuel pressure test and everything is where it needs to be per the haynes manual. The Fuel pressure regulator is working fine as well. What else could be the cause to this. My dad said it still has a lean spot somewhere thats causing the issue.

I finally got a code today for the crankshaft position sensor, so I changed it and we'll see how it goes.

Winnar. When stock cam overlap wont make her backfire...retarded ignition timing will....
