How to replace CV joint?
Wednesday, October 15, 2008 4:52 AM
Is there any tutorials out there that would help illustrate and explain how to change the CV joint for my 01 sunfire gt? From threads I've read, everyone says its easy.

Thanks for any info!

It's almost as cheap, (and a whole lot easier), to just replace the complete axle with a rebuilt.

and replace the whole axle. there's no point in pulling the old one off, pulling it apart, reassembling it, and reinstalling when a NEW (non rebuilt) axle should only cost $60-$70.

just did mine tonight, pull off the tire and take the axle nut off, and the rotors and calipers, the driver side has a clip that you don't want to lose, pull the axles out of the trans and make sure to inspet the output shaft seals, pop the new ones in and torque all the nuts you took off to spec and be done.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Install the washer and the new drive axle nut (2).
Insert a drift (1) into the rotor and against the caliper in order to prevent the rotor from turning.

Tighten
Tighten the drive axle nut to 200 N·m (144 lb ft).
