I'll get this out of the way first: Im new to this forum, but not forums in general, so if this is in the wrong forum please move it to the proper forum.
I own a '96 Sunfire (2.2l) thats been lowered a fair time ago and finally the poor roads out here got the better of it.
Last weekend I hit a pothole and the ABS dash light came on, so I pulled into a parking lot and looked things over just thinking there might be something caught between the calipers and disks in the front or in the rear drums. To my unpleasent surprise I end up w/ some busted wiring which, I suppose, are the wires to the LR brake. I was just wondering if anyone would care to enlighten me on if I could just jack up the car and solder the wires back together, wait until I need to get the car inspected in December and have them fix it, or just take it to the dealer?
Thanks for your time,
~Steven
if your not familer with breaks and or abs breaks for that matter your best bet may just be take it to a mechanic just to have it looked at first (before trying to mess with it)
im could be wrong about this but, even if you re connect the wires (if it were just that) i think the lights would go out iof that was the true cause, but if they didnt then obviously its not that simple and could be other problems..I hit a pot hole (im assumeing thats what did it) a while back and ever since my abs light will turn on and off every so often, sometimes i can drive all day with out it going on, other times it just wont go out..
my buddy told me what the causes could be, (wheel bearing being one issue) friday I took my car to get new tires and the mechanic was nice enough to ask if I usually do my own work on the car, i tell him yes and he says ok cool heres what you need to do and had me follow him to my car that was up on the lift, he then confirms what my buddy mentioned...the wheel bearing is messed up and I need a new one (we will be replacing sunday)
worste case scenario, take it to monroe and just explain to them the isue, tell them you dont have the money to fix it on the spot but want to know what the issue is so you can come back in a few days and have it fixed.. they wont pressure you to get it fixed thinking you will come back, they will tell you all the issues after they look and will tell you their cost to fix it.. if you do know how to make those sort of repairs you can fix it for even less then their price..
goodluck,
I know in PA where I live, the car will still pass inspection with the ABS light on....mine has been on for 3 yrs.
