I have a 2005 2.2 litre manual cavalier with around 50k miles. How do i change/check the transaxle fluid? How do I get to the transaxle fluid?

well, to start off a manual doesnt have tranny fluid. only automatics. sticks use clutch fluid, which really doesnt need to be changed unless you just changed the clutch in which it will need to be bled, but you said nothing about that so i assume there is nothing wrong with the clutch, so you shouldnt really have to do anything right now.

If there is no fluid in the tranny, what lubricates the gears? My '97 uses syncromesh fluid. I think the newer manuals use ATF. I could be wrong though.

Oh so wrong. Please know what your talking about before opening up your mouth again.

OP you have the F23 getrag tranny.

The F23 requires Dextron 3 ATF.

Look at this link since your search button is broken.

accually in the getrags you use
Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fluid
1 litre container
GM PN 88861801 (canada)
you DON'T HAVE TO CHANGE IT EVER
unless you remove a shaft then you have to top it up there is no did stick on the 00+ there is a hole in the side that you have to remove a screw and fill till it leaks out then replace the screw

trans holds 1.7L if i remember correctly just did this in June on my car and have the bottle sitting in front of me
i went to the dealer and told them what trans i had and ask if it was the same as a 99 tranny and the answer is NO the 95-99 Isuzu uses the syncromesh fluid and the 00+ use the 1 i listed, ATF might work but its for automatics might as well get the stuff GM says to put in

once again DON'T CHANGE it UNLESS you have removed a shaft or something its not a maintenance item

Izusu trans uses synchro mesh fluid.

Getrags take 2 QUARTS of dex 3 or equivalent.
