When hitting bumps, there's a terrible rattle from the drivers side. I had to replace a broken motor mount a while back and it helped some but the rattle is still there. I've suffered with this problem for a long time and I've finally ordered a new tranny mount. Without an engine hanger, does anyone have any tips for doing this repair?

get a floor jack and piece of wood under it, take off everything in your way, and dont try to work around it.....itll be easier in the end that way.

That's what I did for the engine mount, but I wasn't sure it would work very well for the tranny mount. It seems like I'm going to have to get the engine tilted to get to the mount.

Will I need to put the jack under the tranny pan? Is that safe to do?

Yes thats correct just place 2x4 piece of wood on the floor jack, lift it slightly under the tranny pan take the tension off, Should beable to unbolt it. ( Just like John Benham said ).

I'm going to be doing this repair tomorrow. Will I be able to remove the mount through the top or does it have to come out from underneath the car? I plan on removing the airbox and battery to give myself extra room through the top.

Yes removing airbox and battery is a good thing to do, Its easier to take the mount from the bottom of the car. It should be pretty straight forward.

Well, it seemed like it was going pretty well. Then the expansion bolt head sheared off! Now I'm trying to get it drilled out and I'll have to find another bolt. Hopefully I can manage to not destroy the threads on the expansion pipe.

The Cavalier is beating me down again! I like this little car, but I hate working on it.

UPDATE........

I was able to get another expansion pipe bolt at a local dealership for a $1.50. Then I spent most of the day Saturday drilling the bolt out and using progressively bigger extractors. I used 3/4 a can of PB Blaster while doing this. Still no go.

So today I busted out the propane torch and applied massive amounts of heat and still couldn't extract the remaining bolt! Then I tried some new hacksaw blades trying to cut it into quarters. Still no go.

Now I'm going to reassemble and drive it this week, hoping that some on the road impacts will set me up for success next week! The only good news is that based on how loose the rubber is in the bracket, I'm pretty sure that getting this replaced will solve my problem.

Oh geez man, Sorry to hear that a bolt broke, Damn that sucks. U might want to grab a can of settlane torch I know auto parts places sell them. It will give u enough heat to extract that bolt. I know the propane torch isnt enough, I ran into the same problem with a different bolt issue, I hope u get things patched up.

Yeah, I should have gone with acetelyne first, but the propane was all I had. Strangely enough, the rattle seems to be gone now! Maybe the bracket was just loose, but it sure didn't seem like it. And there wasn't any damage to the bolt holes on the frame.

Anyhow, I'll get back to screwing with it soon. Right now I just need to rest up my aching muscles after yesterday's marathon of Cavalier work.

I was able to finish this tonight after quartering the bolt with a jigsaw. I had to remove 3 bolts and loosen the 4th on the tranny bracket to have enough space to get the old mount off. It's about a 2-3 hour job if you don't break any bolts! I may do the dogbone tomorrow just for piece of mind and probably an oil change.

No more rattling! Now if I can just get all the squeeks out of the dash........

It is the manual. And the rattling was not resolved. I've given up on it since it's time with me is getting short.
