I have a 94 Z24 and just recently had the steering make a loud thump when I was turning out fo a parrallel parking spot, once away the steering wheel was no longer alligned. I've taken a look at the tie rods and rest of the steering setup and can't see any thing out of the ordinary. But the rack seems to have popped the end off it. (maybe rusted through) and the rubber covers over the inner parts are no longer covering the rack. The Passengers side is a bit rusted and kindof looks like it has "popped". The next time I went to drive it it made the same Pop and is still off allignment. My only other thought was if there is a pinion or gear at the end of the steering colum that might have jumped teeth. The steering seems to work just fine, turns right and left as should and the tires are still alligned with eachother. (maybe the mount for the steering colum has warn loose? Thanks for any assistance you can give me. (this is my winter car right now and will be needing it in the next month or so. )

Pictures of the issue....
although I think this is my problem, maybe I should have put the summer tires on for the summer....
thats the drivers side steering rack mount and it appears it has torn its mount (and some of the firewall) away from the firewall.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Can I weld the area back together maybe? or a plate behind it to a new location on the firewall?
I am hearing that same thumping noise and I hope like hell that mine isn't looking like that!! Thank you for your photos it gives me a good place to look!

I hope it's not the same thing too. And I have since hung a U bolt on it and through the firewall (which is all rusting away) and it has stopped making thumping noises, but the steering is still very loose, especially when I turn right. I need a piece of metal to put behind the firewall and then I can really clamp down the U bolt and stop it from sliding back and forth.
