Here is what I found
Service bulletin #07-02-32-006 clunk felt/noise heard from steering column, steering gear and/or front of car during turning maneuver and/or steering wheel rotation. Lub I-shaft.
How hard is this to do? I've always known that these cars had a nice clunk occassionally when turning but this one I just bought makes alot more than I've heard before. Do you have to replace the steering shaft?
From what I remember reading, this procedure lubricates the slip joint that is part of the steering column. When it's not lubricated properly, it does a "stick then slip" routine, which should occur at regular intervals when turning the wheel (usually every 1/2 turn). If it seems to be more random or frequent, I would suspect the strut mounts.
I think to access this, there is a boot under the hood where the steering shaft comes through that you have to pull back to access the bolt that clamps the lower half of the shaft to a u-joint on the top of the steering rack. After that, I think you need to drop the steering column somewhat to allow the half shaft to slide out. I'm going from memory here based on an ancient post, so I'm probably missing a lot.
Within that service bulletin, there should be instructions on how to perform this. It should also reference a lube kit that has a syringe that's used to inject the grease into one portion of the shaft, and instructions on how to properly do so. I just remember reading through it once, and it didn't sound like a fun way to spend a couple of hours, so I didn't worry much more. Mind you, I don't believe that my noises are originating there either.
At least the fix seems to be "lubricate", not "replace".
