I cannot seem to find my manual for my year 2000, 4 door Sunfire.
Can anyone tell me when the transmission fluid needs to be changed? I am thinking 80,000km but I just needed to be sure. Anyone have a manual?
Greatly appreciated.
I think you mean Manual or Auto? Auto
50,000 miles (83,000 km) Change automatic transaxle fluid and filter if the vehicle is mainly driven under one or more of these conditions. ---In heavy city traffic where the outside temperature regularly reaches 90 F (32 C) or higher.---In hilly or mountainous terrain.---When doing frequent trailer towing---Uses such as found in taxi, police or delivery service..If you do not use your vehicle under any of these conditions, the fluid and filter do not require changing....MO is to change it anyway at 50,000 you dont always have to go by the books.
Thanks a bunch, yeah I got the car used and it was at 101,000, I now have it at 184,000. So the "Transaxle Fluid" would mean the transmission fluid basically then....
Heavy City traffic with temperatures reaching up to 32 degrees fits the bill for me, so I should ask them to filter it when they change it?
Yes,automatic transaxle fluid is transmission fluid. You are due for a change. When changing it put a NEW FILTER in and NEW FLUID in.Might want to get a complete transmission flush....Welcome
you get a complete flush on that trans, you will kill it. speaking from years of experience here...

I have to 120% agree Joshua on that quote, My buddy got his auto transmission flushes not even a month later tranny started to slip, I can see getting tranny flush with a 5 spd, But an auto isnt such a good idea. Cause the older the transmission needs the metal particles to allow the tranny bands to grab. Just change the fluid & filter, Wash the tranny pan with a good degreaser, Install the pan gasket. Youre good to go.
Good Luck.

please, expand on how you could see flushing a manual trans?
everything else was spot on, except that statement. BUT, not all transmission flushes are bad. if they are done on a proper schedule from the time the car is new, then they are a good thing. however, if its never been done before, dont start now. just drop the pan, change the filter, add new fluid, and be on your way.

To void battle of opinions, If proper oil changes and maintance drive train, You wont need to flush these systems, just like proper oil changes schedule on time, Due to abuse could differ.

I am pretty sure youre mechanically exp, 5pd tranny is not needing big servicing, For sure out-last automatic tranny by far. Now for people that are lil hard on 5 spds a flush woudlnt hurt, pieces of metal shavings synrco's could cause gear damage. Once again this my exp, This example. Alot of flushes are just an extra cash making @ oil shops, People are to do what ever they want, Why spend unnecessary money when u dont have too, I hope that helps you out with youre question Rich.
So I just tell the guy to change the fluid and filter... would the guy automatically wash the tranny pan with a degreaser anyways? Or should I ask him to do this?
Secondly guys, how much about does it cost? (Canadian)
Thanks for all your help on this.
i dont know in canada, but i would do it myself were I you. you need a gasket, some RTV, and a ratchet...oh...and a drip pan.
I checked my fluid today...it is brown, but doesnt smell yet, so i might try to change mine. the fact that i dont have a drain plug doesnt make the prospect too appealing to do several times over the course of a few months.
Maybe i could buy a tap and die and drill a hole, thread it and stick a bolt inside it?

Does anyone know what transmission fluid the 3 spd auto takes? Im not even sure it is the 3 spd. the trasn pan says "GM HydraMatic" on the pan.

Believe me if I knew how to do it myself I would definitely do it
yea you have the 3spd. i do mine every 12000 miles or every year like it says on the filter box top. when the trans pan is down i spray it with brake parts cleaner. if you can change oil, chances are you can do this. also, to make a drain, i drilled a hole in my pan, and welded a nut in it, and put a bolt in the nut i welded to the pan. works great.
Did I mention I drive a 2000 Lumina now?-----wigm-tuners.org member
