Loud clunking noise

Any Cavalier or Sunfire owners out there who have experienced this?

When I turn the steering wheel (whether it be in forward or reverse) at times I get a loud clunking noise, and it seems to be coming from the driver's side front wheel area. The clunking noise only mainly comes when I turn my steering wheel to a complete 90 degrees... small turns of the steering wheel don't make the noise come as much.

My mechanic told me it was something I do not really need to fix, he says this happens to a lot of GM vehicles with age.

I was just wondering if anyone had this type of problem diagnosed on their car...

I would check out your front strut mounts first.

See the clunking noise is not always bad, it can be intermittent. I have been driving with it for over 4 months now, and it has not gotten any worse, still the same. It is definitely the front driver's side area, cause that is where the sound comes from. So far my mechanic has been right, but I still would like to get it fixed.

For the front strut mounts, I am no mechanic, so I do not know how to check them or what to look for... I heard something about tire rods as well.

If it happens with the steering wheel at 90 degree intervals, then it's most likely the steering shaft in need of a "lube kit". I'm too lazy to search right now, but I think that we just discussed some of the details on this somewhere else on here recently.
It's not really anything that's likely to cause you more of a problem - just an annoyance. It can be fixed if it bothers you too much - it all depends on what you're willing to put up with, versus spend money on.
