Pipe in Intake Manifold on 95 OHV

Right, so I've been working on my Intake Manifold by giving it a good clean-up, along with the upper intake manifold and throttle body. Theres something thats been bothering me, most likely its related to the IAC. The only thing I could find searching is the Tuner Tube... But I have a feeling this ain't a tuner tube.

What in the world is that metal pipe? It is actually necessary to have it? ( Although I do think it is, seems to work along with the IAT. )

its the egr riser. it makes the exhaust gasses go higher in the plenum so they dont just get sucked into #'s 2 and 3. since they are higher, there's a better chance for even distribution.

So without it it would mean that the air sucked in wouldn't be able to distribute itself evenly beween #2 and #3? Alright, at least I finally know what it is.

Thanks.
