Transmission Noise....
Saturday, November 15, 2008 12:06 PM
Hey guys I have a 97 5-speed and my car is making a weird noise coming from the transmission. It sounds like gears rubbing together, but I'm stumped as to what it is. When I'm on the gas, there is no noise, but when I let off the gas I can hear the grinding sound. The sound is coming from down by my feet. At slower speeds it isn't a constant grind, the noise sounds like when a part is rotating it is clunking at one point. When the car moves faster, the clunking is comes up more. It happens in all gears. I'm just confused because the noise goes away when I press the accelerator, even slightly the noise goes away, but returns when I left off the gas. I'm stumped as to what it is...anybody have any ideas?

Yeah thats what I was afraid of, but it doesn't have a problem shifting gears, everything still shifts smoothly. I took it to the shop today and they are going to look at it tomorrow. The guy thought it might be something as simple as a tranny mount coming loose since the noise goes away under load. We'll see!

Sounds kind of like you might have developed flat spots on the tires.
