11.9V at alternator...would that cause the batt light? - Maintenance and Repair Forum

I have a reading of 11.9ish Volts on the alternator of my cavi. The battery still reads a steady 13.55. I thought the reading had to be below 11v before the batt light came on in a car.
Also, i have a "heating up" issue. the serpentine belt is old and worn and im going to replace it, should i just replace the alternator too? or should i wait and see? also, is the lack of engine temp (i just changed the thermostat) related to this or a separate issue entirely? I would think it would have to be separate, but i just dont know...

yup...buy a new alt....and more then likely you rbattery wil go shortly after...or atleast thats my experience.
As for your engine temp....why did you change the t-stat?
yea when running should put out between 12.5 and 14.4 volts...

I just changed the T stat last week. Im gonna put the old one back in, it was working fine. I think either AZ gave me the wrong one or a faulty one.
As for the alt, Autozone has a duralast gold with LT warranty and its easy to change so that will be my course of action. Ill prolly change it saturday/sunday.
Meanwhile, i pulled the battery out. and parked the car. the battery has 12.5V in it at a dead sit with nothing connected to it. I put it on my trickle charger. think the batt will be ok?

Where is the damned tensioner on a 2.2L OHV?

13.5 and 14.4. although,13.5 is quite low output, but it will work.

Follow the belt route, U will see a alum arm with a pulley on it, You can use serpentine tool to remove it, I havent had too much luck with this tool, I just used long flat screw driver or or broom handle push down on the tensionor then the serpentine belt will come off.
Good Luck.
yea if you get the right tool it should come loose with ease. you usually cant use a socket because there is very little clearence where you need to get to. i wish i had this tool when i did my water pump...

He has the 2.2, not the 2200, in which case the tensioner is loosened with a (I think 15mm) wrench... its in line with the upper motor mount. Note: You TIGHTEN (clockwise) the bolt to loosen the tensioner.
yeah i got it...boy was it a PITA with a wrench. Serp belt is def. a 2 man job.

once you do it a couple times, its real easy. the trick is to get it on all the belts except the alternator, get the tensioner with the wrench, and pull it on the alt. i can do the belt on this car in like 5 minutes.

Alternator should be putting out just over 14 volts
Sounds like the Voltage Regulator or Alternator are about to go
