im having a debate with myself right now

2000 cavalier coupe automatic
plastic gas tank
vin 4
WHERE is my fuel pump, is it in the black plastic sleeve behind the tank near where the filter is? or is it an internal pump in the gas tank itself.

You dont need to touch your exhaust to drop the tank. Just drive the car around(if you can) to empty the tank. I would recommend having an extra set of hands to help with the tank.

car wont start so thats out, i can get it to turn over, the fuel pump doesnt prime, and it trys to stumble some gas into the motor. but it wont catch and start.

i have about 1/4 tank left so it shouldnt be that bad.

the exhaust has been moved since i replaced that a while ago, its not in the way of the gas tank by any means.

looking at the tank from underneath i see one of the straps is worn through from (rust/ corrosion) do i need both of those straps? obviously its probably a good thing, but is there anything else holding the tank up? or just the straps?

just to play what if here... did you try the fuel pump relay? and yes, they wouldn't have put both straps on there if it didnt need them.

i did not try the relay i will admit. i hit the tank a couple times as someone said it may get it started temporarily.

where is the relay? how can i test it?

check the fuse(s), check the relay, check for power and ground at the pump before you drop the tank

i checked all fuses. they are all good. and the pump remains grounded.

still dont know how to check the relay.

try swapping the 2 relays in the fuse box under the hood.... if your car starts its the relay

I hope you replaced the rusted strap! If the other one lets go, you could have a real mess!
It's usually a good idea to replace both if one goes. Most things like that deteriorate at similar rates - kind of like headlight bulbs and tires.
