It could be a lot of things try to find out where the sound is coming from. However if you are no mechanic as you said I wouldn't start off with an engine swap. Plus we need to know what kind equipment you have so help us help you.

So your water pump exploded??? that is the only think I could think of to get coolant everywhere when your belt comes off.

Water pumps can make lots of noise when they're letting go - hopefully that's all that was wrong. Make sure you replace the belt at the same time, and clean off the pulleys so that the new belt isn't covered in coolant as well.
If you have a shop doing this, then hopefully they'll do that for you. As long as you didn't overheat it, then your thermostat is still likely fine. If it DID overheat, then I would change the thermostat while it's drained. They often fail soon after suffering an overheated condition, so it may as well get done while things are apart and drained.

the water pump in the 2.2 is the easiet one ive ever done. just 4 bolts and a gasket, and the pump is only like $25 at o' rileys or autozone.
