Picked up my girlfriends sisters old car. 01 cavalier. Recently just changed the VC gasket, plugs, wires, filter and oil. Now I have a P0440 Evap code. Ive checked the harness by the gastank and the wires are still solid. Any ideas? Also my TRACK OFF and ABS light is on. Checked the plug behind the front rotors and it seems undamaged also ideas? My service light is on which i assume is because of my ABS/trac light.
Yeah, service engine soon light is probably on because of the abs/trac light. For those being on i'd start at checking the front end (shaking left-right, top-bottom, and diagional) to see if either wheel bearings are loose. You should check the back 2 also. If all of them are tight i would get a volt meter, or something to measure resistance. Remove the plug from the wheel speed sensor (the ones behind the rotors) and attach the leeds on your meter to the sensor (the one that attaches to the wheel bearing) and see what it says. I'm pretty sure it should be between 1500-1900 on these. If it Reads OL or OFL that means out of limits. Meaning there is an open in the sensor and it needs a new bearing. If all the bearings test ok, you can start by checking the harness for any evidence of kinks or where it could have been crushed by another component.
Hope this helps.

check the IAT.damaged/unplugged IAT sensor will cause the trac off/abs light on problem. as for the 0440...
i wrote: 0440 relates directly to the evaporative emissions system. the parts that it monitors include (from stern to stem): the gas cap, the gas fill neck, the gas tank, the gas tank pressure sensor, the vacuum lines running from the tank to the evap canister, the canister itself, the valve on the canister, the lines from the canister to the purge valve, the purge valve itself, and finally, the line from the purge valve to the intake manifold.
if any one of these 16 parts is faulty, it could trigger the 0440. the most common place to begin diagnosis is with the gas cap, as if not screwed on tight enough (by yourself or the gas station attendant) -or- if the rubber on the cap has degraded enough to not make a seal, then this code could be thrown. a gas cap should not cost more than $6-$8 at your local parts tore. next, a visual inspection of the lines to see if any are cracked, broken, kinked, or otherwise pinched off/leaking. if, after these inspections have been made and determined to not be the cause of the problem, i wold recommend getting your emissions system smoke tested.the parts after these simple diagnoses can get quite expensive depending on where you get them from, and as such, you'll only want to change the part thats causing the issue.

Ive checked the plugs on the front wheels..is there ABS/TRAC plug on the rear as well?
I had this same problem not long ago after I got my cavalier...ENG, ABS and TRAC OFF lights on at the same time. Problem:
"ABS wheel speed sensor"
Each wheel has one, one or more could be damaged... it is not something you can see at simple view, you have to take it to the dealer or get a computer connected to you vehicle to see which one is it.
Fortunately this happened to me when I still had factory warranty, because those sensors are expensive
hope this helps

You don't HAVE to take it to a dealership. Yes, it would be nice if someone did all the work for you, that way it'd take all the guess work out of it. It's really not hard checking to see if the sensors are bad though. I explained it pretty well in my first post.

Kinda funny, the topic names are almost the same. I guess the Search feature would have really worked on this one, huh? I could care less and am happy to try heling others. Just seems to be a common problem with 00+ J's
