i started up my car this morning everything was fine dug it out from the snow, drove about a mile and the thermostat didn't seem to kick in the temp was goin to like 200 degrees and above i pull over and shut the car off all the sudden i smell coolant.. then i try to trace where it is coming from and its coming from the top of the radiator and spilling all over the fan... the coolant was premixed 50/50 dex-cool changed last year w/ my thermostat.... i'm wondering if this happened to anyone else or is this just a fluke.? thanks for reading

what kind of car do you have? I am familiar with having an overflow tank. It seems to me as if it was a 1 in a million chance.. But it shouldnt have been boiling out @ 200 degrees... I know my car makes it to 220 before the fan even turns on, and it never boils out of the overflow tank. You could have other issues that I am not familiar with causing your problem. Did your low coolant light come on? And did everything go back to normal after this incident? Have you added coolant lately?

Yeah, that's what i would have figured too matt the fan should come on around 215 220 degrees, as for the coolant boiling out i would have figured it would had to have been a lot warmer than 200 more like 235 240.

no coolant light no nothing the only thing i can think of is perhaps ice build up in the lines... if that were to happen what would blow the water pump? i took a look at it again btw 2.2L ohv 3 speed auto 4 door sunfire, i heard a pop im not sure the more i think about it the more i think it could have been the water pump, or hg but i doubt that would blow.

I had a problem with my 2.2 overflowing before the fan would cut on. Replacing the overflow cap resolved the problem. Strangely enough, the problem was worse in cold weather and would happen shortly after starting car! Example: start the car, drive a couple miles then idle for a minute and it would overflow like crazy. At first I thought I had a head gasket leak. The new cap from the dealer was 18 psi instead of the original 15 psi.

These cars also seem to just have a kinda crappy cooling system. They are prone to air pockets and don't seem to circulate well. Just my 2 cents.
