Power Steering Pump - 97 2.2
Wednesday, December 17, 2008 6:55 PM
So my head gasket took a crap on Thursday, and Ive just about got the head off. The only part holding me up is I think the power steering pump. The Haynes manual wont tell me how to remove it. Is it the 3 bolts you gain access to by turning the belt wheel?

Thanks in advance;

Nobody? Its a 2.2OHV.

I've got 2 of the bolts out from behind the wheel, but it is still in there like a rock and I cant reach the bottom bolt...hell, I've already completely removed the engine mount from the car...

you have to turn the pully and get the 3 bolts there is 3 there then theres on on the otherside of itbetween the pump and intake manifold

i found it easyier to get the pump off first your gonna have a dink of a time if the moutn is off and the motor sagged should have asked this qustion first

The motor is held up right now with 2 floor jacks, and isnt sagging at all, I'm hapy to say

Thanks for the heads up...I wonder if I can just lift the head up with the pump still attached and just swap out the gaskets right there...

Okay, finally got it...3 bolts behind the wheel, and 2 bolts holding the bracket behind the pump.

Now I just need to get someone to help me lift the head off so I can remove the last PVC line and I am good to go!

Good news; the head is off

And the gasket did not tear through into the cylinders!

Bad news; I ripped a couple wires out underneath the intake manifold..looks like ignition control?

Whats a good way to repair that? Can I pop off the blue part and solder the cabling back in? Or would you recommend cutting another out of a junkyard car?

i would cut one off a car at the junk yard

theses pins inside that you reall can't re attach you can get pins i think but just got to a wrecker cut a lead of wire then connect it NOTE you can get that from pretty sure EVERY GM car look into a car with a 3800 NA or super as they are right on top under the cover or i think the 3400s are easy to get to aswell

there not barried like the 2.2

Alright, got one off a Grand Am with a Quad OHC and soldered it on...put the block back on, exhaust manifold is back on, and vaccuum lines and wiring, etc...all that is left is the two lines behind the block (vacuum and one that I THOUGHT was for A/C) and then the power steering pump, belt, valve cover and motor mount

What is the best way to drain anti-freeze from the car? The day before it finally went I had topped it off with a gallon of $9 walmart antifreeze and I have a gallon of dexcool sitting in the garage right now ready to pour in...

if you're draining the coolant, flush the system and for the love of all that is this platform, dont use dexcrap.
