My wife pimped me out to a friend of hers to put a new stereo in a '91 Cavalier RS with the 3.1 v6. After I put new speakers in it, it started and ran fine. My wife goes to move it later and it just dies. I also briefly removed the radio, then put it back in because they bought the wrong conversion kit. Here's what I've done so far to troubleshoot.
Checked fuel pressure - 43 PSI
It's making good spark to the plugs I checked (#2 and #4)
Replaced the crank sensor
I'm getting no injector pulse. I was thinking the ICM went out on it, but I was hoping someone on here has had experience with J-bodys. Is there a relay or fusable link in the injector harness somewhere?
The oil pressure sending unit was disconnected. I hooked it bak up as part of the troubleshooting process. Should I unplug it again?
Guess I'm going to have to buy a Chiltons for it so I can figure out what's wrong. I will NEVER work on someone else's car again.
Thought on ur issue.Being ur getting spark on two cyldrs and it is not firing the only thing that in most cases would cause this is the coil packs. The ecm is fine based on ur scenario at least in my know how.Leave the oil pressure hooked up.Being u have fuel(good) its just not firing but turning over and the cps is new that's ok but no fire on the other hand points to the D.I.S module (distributorless ignition system) is faultly. It is hard to write on how to to check each coil pack but a haynes manual for 82-94 jbodys tells u how to check the module and the packs.I would just replace the coil packs(both) and go to the dis module next .Unless u want to use a multimeter to varify the voltage step by step. The dis module ties the 1 and 4 together and 3-6 together and 5-2 and I mean spark plugs if this makes any sense (basically the #1 -#4 are on the same circuit and the others are grouped together on the same circuit as I stated. That is where I would start being the parts are prob the original and way old and it is totally possible for the circuit to only half azz work.I hope this gives u a simple check, with all the blah.Start with new coil packs, then the module unless u want to do the homework by book to varify voltage very specific etc.hope this helps and may other add or correct me if need be.
Oops the car should have 3 coil packs if I am not mistaken.I did not realize this until after the fact.Ok
Well, I found two bad injectors. One read 6 ohms, and one read 0 ohms. They should read 12 ohms. Once I replaced them, it started right up.
