so i'm having some problems with my 2000 z24 and need some help diagnosing the problem.
i was driving down the highway yesterday, and lost power all of a sudden. popped the hood, and the engine was smoking, and had sludge, could be oil?, all over the engine bay. it would turn over, but wouldn't start. i came back later that night and it started, but knocked pretty badly. it started to calm about 30 seconds after running, but didnt stop. it also dies after running for about a minute now, and also dies under acceleration.
any clues on what could be the problem?

So you didn't check the oil level? Or where the leak was coming from?

oil was about a quart low, and i couldnt tell where the leak was coming from. there was just sludge in the engine bay that looked like it could possibly be oil, i'm not for sure though.

Any blue or white smoke from exhaust?

Hmm anything knocking isnt good. I hope it isnt a rod bearing(damn stock 2.4's)
Thats weird there was oil in the engine bay, check to see if your dipstick came out the black, check down by your oil filter. Just trying to think of something places where oil could of came out of.

Its also possible the bearings in teh water pump took a dump. That would spray some nasty looking liquid (sometimes it comes out brown) and make a knocking noise if they are far enough gone.
