hey guys i need some help with trying to diagnose my friends 01 sunfire 2.2. everytime we try to put gas in the gas filler neck fills up and comes back out and wont go into the tank. i pulled the tank and checked the lines and the lines were clear. has anybody had this problem? is there a check valve that can go bad or what do i need to do to fix this? any help is greatly appreciated.
no check valve. hows the filler neck look? if its kinked (have no idea how that would happen...) it could cause this situation. also, if someone put tampons in the fill neck (vandalism) it could cause this.check all the way into the tank as well.

i pulled the filler neck off and tank out and checked the whole neck and it was comletely open. then before i put it back i tried to put gas in and no problems so i put it all back in and it happened again. there are no kinks in the filler neck. any idea how much a gas tank cost?
What if the sender was reading incorrectly and the tank if full? Thus, not being able to put fuel in a full tank or when pumping gas try to adjust the nozzle in or out of the neck to see if it will fill. Also try putting a couple gallons in a gas can and see if it takes if then.
did you try putting gas in the tank while the neck was off? like directly from a gas can to the tank? if you can do that, and there's no obstruction in the filler neck, there's no reason (other than a full tank) that should stop the gas going in. just to make sure, you are actulaly getting the nozzle in properly right? like past he little flapper at the beginning of the fill neck? as for a new tank (dont buy one from a yard, dont know how long its been sitting.) its probably $150+.

you could tell by the weight it was only a quarter full so the sender is reading correctly. i put gas in out of a gas can with the neck on while it was on the ground and it went in fine. it seems like the flap at the end of the filler neck about six inches into the actual gas tank isnt opening. maybe i can pull the fuel pump out and see if there is some kind of blockage

if the gas went into the tank with the neck on it, the blockage lies before the fill neck.

the whole fill neck from the gas cap to the tank is fine
ok. lets make a checklist.
-gas will not flow into tank while assembled.
-gas flows through neck into tank while on ground
-no obstruction between fill neck and nozzle rest.
what you're saying is contradictory. there are not that many parts. flapper at cap>fill neck>tank. thats it. if there's no obstruction in the nozzle rest, gas will flow into the fill neck. if it flows into the neck, and there's no obstruction, it will flow into the tank. since you say that fule can be poured into the tank through the neck while the car is on the ground, there is no obstruction there. if its all assembled and you cant get more fuel into the car, its because your car is bulimic.

Isn't there a flap right at the tank or in the neck of the tank?

its a rollover valve, and only closes whn the car has been, well, rolled over. AND, he said he poured the fuel in to the tank through the neck.

all i can think is there is something in the tank not allowing the rollover valve to open all the way and causing the gas to back up so im going to pull the tank again and pull the fuel pump out and see if there is anything in the tank blocking it.
our car did that once, I pulled the pump nozle out a bit and pumped slow, never thought much of it sience it never hapened sience.
this car does it no matter what. it did it pouring slowly out of a five gallon gas can
ok so i just found out that there is a hose that goes to a charcoal filter and if that line gets clogged it will build pressure in the gas tank that will prevent the gas from flowing into the tank
well its worth a shot it better than just giving up and buying a new tank
nah, what rich said. the EVAP has NOTHING to do with pressure out of the tank while filling it.
Working on obtainting an M-Class license... ?? Hint: 2 wheels.
well do you have any suggestions other than what i have already tried? when i disconnected the evap hose to pull the tank out the first time there was a lot of built up air that came out so thats why i figured it might be that
I say put everything back together and try a different gas pump.
we tried several gas pumps to no avail. but it is my pleasure to say it is fixed it WAS the evap system. aparently the evap vent solenoid valve had went bad allowing a build up of pressure in the tank causing the rollover valve to remain shut and sealing the gas tank. if your still confused read your haynes manual chapter 6 emissions it will explain everything
so im confused. you said you dropped the tank. if you did this, you would have disconnected everything, leaving BIG holes in the tank. holes dont hold pressure. but whatever, you got it fixed.

if you read my second post i said that when i pulled it out i could put gas in it with no problem but when i put it all back in the car i couldnt get gas in it again.
it takes days for THAT much pressure to build up in the tank. diconnect the evap lines, they have no vacuum either. did you start it after putting the tank back in? if no, then there's NO WAY ANY pressure could have built up. i'm just saying, that something sounds very wrong. again, glad you got it worked out.
