How 2 Check the Auto Transmission Fluid On a 97 z24
Monday, January 12, 2009 9:01 PM
I just did an engine swap, the previous owner smoked the 2.4, head gasket went out and drove it to the death of the motor. i dropped a new one in. I did a tranny filter and gasket also, the torque converter is empty, so is the radiator. How much fluid do i need? There is only a red cap with no dip stick. How do i check the level on this tranny???

Thanks!

I can't remember what my manual said,I think like 5 quarts, but after you fill it,there is a nut on the bottom of the trans, undo that ,if it comes gushing out, wait until it's slowly coming out, then it should be at the right level.

i think the check nut is on the passanger side of the tranny toward the bottom.

There's a pretty good description available here by clicking the View Answer button and following the link.

Yeah there's a check plug on the passenger side. It's not hard to get too. Run the car till it's hot. Shift into all gears. Put car back in park. Jack the car up and make sure it's level. Usually that means you have to jack up the rear too. WITH THE CAR RUNNING, remove the check plug. If fluid comes out, wait till it slows to a slow drip. If nothing come out, add some fluid, wait for it to spill out and slow to a slow drip. Put the plug back in, THEN shut the car off. If you pull the plug with the car off, you'll lose about 2 qts of fluid and the tranny will be under filled. I have done this with the car on the ground but it's kind of a pain to get to the plug. Easiest thing to do is run it up on some rhino ramps and then jack the rear up.
